There’s nothing like being greeted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (a.k.a. Mitchell from Modern Family) with coffee in one hand and his puppy Leaf in the other - two (er, three!) of our favorite things. He ushered us inside and introduced us to his lawyer fiancé Justin Mikita, and after getting acquainted with the pair's charming selves —Ferguson is very much like his quirky character counterpart —we decided to get down to business.
They then revealed a meticulously organized shoe closet with each pair neatly labeled. The couple also boasts a fairly impressive collection of vests and jackets in a variety of tweeds and plaids. We chatted style icons and inspirations (Mikita confessed his to be a combo of Cov-alum Brad Goreski and Tom Ford, while Ferguson said GQ Magazine), sharing clothes (“I wish we wore the same size [shoe]!” Ferguson exclaimed) and the secret to grooming (which Ferguson revealed is a “team of well trained Hollywood hairdressers,” adding, “I am definitely the most high maintenance of the men in the makeup and hair trailer”).
With a decidedly dapper penchant for bow ties, the topic of conversation quickly turned to the couple's biggest passions—their charity Tie The Knot, in collaboration with The Tie Bar, which works to promote marriage equality. (You know how much we love a good cause!) While Ferguson acts as the creative brains, Mikita mans the business side of things and the duo decides on everything from fabric to design.
“I have to admit, I am new to the self-tie bow-tie. I proudly own many clip-on ties,” Ferguson confessed. “So I went to work scouring YouTube, watching ‘how-to’ videos. I eventually made a ‘how-to’ video of my own, but you should know, I learned how to tie my first bow-ties only hours before we shot that video. Talk about under pressure!”
And though the guys disagree on many things —the good ol’ Barneys versus Bergdorf’s debate, favorite karaoke song and style preference (Mikita chooses T-shirt and jeans; Ferguson opts for tux and bow tie) —the duo collectively agree on the Modern Family versus Family Matters issue. We think you know their answer!
