"It's more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail - then you can dream all the rest around it.
Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?" -Dries Van Noten

Bernadette Morra

Editor-In-Chief, FASHION Magazine. Toronto

When it comes to the Canadian fashion game, Bernadette Morra is at the height of her career. For starters, she's geared FASHION Magazine, Canada's #1 fashion and beauty publication in a unique and innovative direction, after joining the team as the Acting Editor in Chief in August 2009. Fast forward a year later, and her temporary gig became concrete - holding the title as Editor in Chief since July 2010. But behind the glossy pages sits a woman whose well-tuned voice and tone is a staple of Canadian style. Since the 1980's, where she began her journalistic career, she contributed to The Canadian Press, The Toronto Star, and Flare Magazine, landing her gig at The Toronto Star in 1998 as in-house fashion writer, and eventually climbed the ranks to tackle the role of Fashion Editor for the newspaper for 15+ years. She's interviewed everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Nicolas Ghesquière, and while the subjects and styles seem to change and the latest collections are unveiled, Morra's deep understanding of personalized style has one common thread - style can't be acquired through study. In fact, true style is innate, embedded within a person's DNA. And most importantly, it's a defining trademark...as individual as a fingerprint. He still wishes he had charged us much more than he did! Skirt, Lanvin

I bought this skirt in the Prada boutique on the Right Bank in Paris several years ago while on summer holiday. I bought the jeweled collar in the first photo on the same visit. I have great shopping memories while on holidays with my husband – although he only comes with me to designer boutiques where he can have wine or tea and be entertained by the staff while I shop. Resale shopping is another story – I go alone. It’s serious treasure hunting that can go on for hours. It’s best not to have someone waiting for you.Skirt, Prada

I bought this YSL jacket from Lynda Latner of vintagecouture.com because FASHION magazine was hosting the party for the premiere of L’Amour Fou at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film documents the relationship between Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge and Berge, Loulou de la Falaise and Betty Catroux were all in attendance. It was the best excuse ever for a fabulous fashion purchase.Jacket, Yves Saint Laurent

I felt sick when I bought it that I was spending so much money but every time I put it on I feel like a princess. Still! And my wardrobe has so much black I need special things like this to give it a jolt. This was definitely money well spent. All, Chanel

I bought this Holt Renfrew private label jacket the year I was married: 1993. It’s interesting that you put it next to a Chanel jacket because Holt’s was deliberating paying homage to Chanel with this design, right down to the gold chain sewn into the hem. The photo is by Michael Awad, and is of the magazine stand at The World’s Biggest Bookstore on one day in 2006. The celebrities on the covers – eg. George Clooney on the cover of Vanity Fair - make it a fabulous documentation of pop culture. I also appreciate this photo because as a magazine editor, I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into each one of the tiny squares.L to R. I just bought this Lanvin pea coat at the boutique in Paris when I was there for the Spring 2011 couture shows.
