Adir Abergel

Adir Abergel

Hair Stylist. Los Angeles

You can never predict the trajectory your career will inevitably take. Different circumstances kick into high gear and change directions within seconds, and for Adir Abergel, this happened in the truest sense. From a prized member of the American Ballet Theatre in New York City to ranking at the top of his game in the world of celebrity hairstyling, it was an irreversible injury during his time as a dancer that catapulted him into his now globally recognized career.

Ditching the concrete jungle to head West, Adir relocated to Los Angeles and became acquainted with Arthur Jones, an influential hairstylist from the 1970’s who was responsible for transforming the locks of Hollywood royalty. During his 20’s, after learning his craft from the talented Mr. Jones, Abergel’s talent and keen approach to stylistic hair landed him on the radar of influential tastemakers across the nation. He hit the ground running and landed spreads in the pages of Vogue, Elle, W and V.

Naturally, a celebrity clientele soon followed, and he has since worked with some of the best leading ladies around today: Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Garner, Rachel McAdams, Sienna Miller and Anne Hathaway. This lover of all things vintage opened up his closet and took The Coveteur for a remarkable trip down memory lane.

My love for putting so many vibes together came from my mom at a very young age. She always let me explore with my style. Whether it was taking her dresses and wearing them to school or wearing all her jewelry at once and sitting with them at the dinner table. I tend to get my jewelry at vintage stores, estate sales, or at NY Adorned on the lower East Side.

This bracelet used to be owned by Humphrey Bogart and the jeweler I bought it from was looking to sell it. I was 17 when I fell in love with this piece. I had no money but was determined to make it my own. I convinced the jeweler to let me make payments every month until I paid for it. This bracelet is hands down my most favorite piece.

Italian Vogue is my fashion bible - I obsess about it on a monthly basis. So many amazing visionaries are included every month. This cover is beautiful for its simplicity. I love the texture of my Moroccan Berber rug in the background.

Both of these jackets are vintage. The black and white one I got when I was living in Paris. The one on the right I got at American Rag in LA. The shoes I got in Japan. The art piece above the shoes is by Rowan Mersh. Rowan used to be the fabricator for Alexander McQueen.

These are the shoes I grew up in as a young boy in Israel. When I visit now, I make it a point to go into the Old City (Jerusalem) where Jesus used to walk and I buy 2 pair once a year. I cannot live without them, they are so comfortable and they are less the $25 each. There is another pair in this picture that I got from and old man in Rawanda that I wear religiously.

I was living in Paris in the 6th. err., there was a small vintage store that sold mostly Hermès and Lanvin and Louis Vuitton. Everything in this store was special but for some reason I fell in love with this box. It’s done a lot of traveling with me since I bought it.

Incorporating jewelry into my style is effortless. It sounds crazy but I usually gravitate towards the pieces I feel I need on me at any given moment.

This tiger was given to me on my birthday by my assistant, Sean Hare. I saw this tiger on a shoot and fell in love with him, a week later he was on my front doorstep. He is the neighborhoods mascot; every child in the neighborhood stops to look and play with him. The scarf is a take on a Palestinian man’s head scarf. I wear it with a diamond tiger pin I bought at Antiquarious (a vintage fine jewelry mart that burnt down.)

I live in these. The shirt on the left I have had since I was 15-years-old. I wore it to dance class every day. I would kill anyone for this shirt.

I love how color can make you happy. I play with color and patterns and shapes a lot both in my home and clothing. I bought this jacket at an estate sale and it was a huge splurge for me. It’s from the 1930's - all hand done; its basically perfect. The shoes were bought at a vintage store called Golyester in Los Angeles. I like to wear this jacket with some black skinny jeans, a big fedora and lots of jewelry.

This painting was given to me by my friend Rosha; it makes me laugh every time I see it. It’s just a sweet and real moment - we have all been there once before. This is the only photo I have of my mom. As you can imagine, its very special to me.
