Ben Baller

Jewelry Designer, IF & Co.; Brand Ambassador; Father; Champagne Hooligan. Los Angeles

Ben Baller is not your average guy. If his iced out Bentley keys (he can’t take credit; it was all Pusha T’s idea) and Rolex big face Presidential watch don't speak volumes, all you need to do is peek inside his home and closet. The jeweller to the stars (and we mean stars: Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber, Dwayne Wade…the list is endless!) has a personal collection of bling that outshines (literally) anything we’ve ever seen in the flesh, let alone in the window of Cartier. His one-of-a-kind pieces complement his one-of-a-kind personality and all the crazy antics this kid has been up to over the years. (FYI: pre-jewelry years, Ben was a professional DJ for Dr. Dre and a big-time music exec who reportedly helped sign Jay-Z’s first record deal, “Reasonable Doubt.” Believe it.) We caught up with B.B. and although we knew all about the dope things he’s knocked out in the past (his company IF & Co. has done everything from diamond encrusted 7-Up cans to bejeweled Pillsbury Doughboys), we never could have prepared ourselves for the ice storm we endured that day. Diamonds aside, Ben Baller is what Pharrell likes to call a “kidult”: his collection of “toys” isn’t your average supply from F.A.O. Schwartz. Ben’s prized Bearbrick collection is simply mind-blowing, not to mention the largest on earth. We ran around Ben’s house like kids in a candy store, playing dress-up with the Bearbricks and the Murakami plush toys found in his newborn son’s nursery. Let’s just say Baby Baller isn’t going to be driving around in your standard Fisher Price mobile; we’re sure it’s going to be supped up with rims and an iced out dashboard or something. At a week old, he’s already got custom Supras, Dior shoes and Gucci wares, but Ben assures us he’s also got “the basic Target brand onesies so he can feel regular.” (Watch out, Hudson Kroenig!)

Me and my wife (the woman in the photo) met through mutual friends and I messaged her on Facebook.

My daily style is super simple. I like to keep it very basic. A Uniqlo V-neck, maybe a Saks Fifth Avenue white tee and a pair of KR3W skinny chinos. If I’m feeling dressy, I’ll throw on some Balmain or Dior Homme skinnies and always keep it pretty basic with black shoes. Sometimes I throw in a rare leopard print or some electric blue or fire red shoes. I like to dress up with the accessories because that’s not easy for the normal guy. I’ve always liked Comme des Garçons since the late 90s and have always been a fan of Marc Jacobs, but I can’t deny Levi’s. They invented denim. I have five pairs of 510 super skinnies at any given time.

The few times I did step out in these leopard shoes, I hurt eyes and feelings. Those shoes hit courtside at the Lakers games, trade shows, fancy restaurants and five-star hotels from here to the Caribbean. The records are what really made me. I was a DJ at a very young age. I've loved music since I was 10! Got my first vinyl 12” around then, too. I love Michael Jackson. I remember “Off the Wall” and “Thriller” so vividly and that “Billie Jean” video on T.V. changed my life. I got to meet him later and then even later on I got to make the legend himself some custom Jewelry! favorite artists? Jesus, there are way too many to list. I’m a big Bob Marley fan, early NWA and Dr. Dre and Ice Cube fan. Nowadays. I fuck with the Weeknd and Drake heavy. That’s my fam right there. Shout out to Toronto!

I love shopping for rare toys and things. Nothing can touch the mecca of Tokyo (specifically Shibuya) and I won’t give up those spots! But Toy Tokyo in New York has some crazy shit. As for clothes? I’m boring. Jeffrey is a great place to spend some money... But I’m basic. It’s places like Barneys where I will always find something to buy. In L.A., I’d say Opening Ceremony or Union and factory 413. In Chicago, I love RSVP Gallery. I used to go to Miami Beach every month back in the 90s, but man, they totally lost that feeling of what South Beach should be. I remember going to Gianni Versace’s house for parties while he was alive!

The world famous artist, Mister Cartoon, wrote on those one day when I asked him, 'How come I don’t have any of your art?' By the time I left his studio, those were there for me. Those grills were given to me from a fan one day in Texas. From 2005 to 2008, I don’t think I left the house without wearing my diamond fronts (grills). I rarely wear them anymore. The K-TOWN belt was made in 1994. A buddy of mine at the time gave it to me. It was another moniker of mine because I was raised in Koreatown.

I got my 1st KAWS piece in 2003. It was a 1000% Bearbrick and a gift from Eddie Cruz the owner of Union, Undefeated, Stussy L.A. and Supreme. He introduced me to a lot of amazing street art before anyone else and I’ve been a big fan of KAWS ever since. This is a 1000% Kubrick commissioned by the estate of Andy Warhol - one of my other favorite artists. The watch? That’s a V serial 18k gold Rolex Presidential Day Date II. I wear this everyday if I can. My pops had one before he passed away and I always used to feel like, when I make it in business or life, I will have a new model Rolex President. Now it’s just more because of my love for Rolex period and my pops rocking one, but doesn’t mean I made it in life.

I used to be super into video games and things, so my home video/audio was a mandatory thing. The sound bar makes the movie going or games at my house sound so crisp. I would much rather watch a new movie release at my home than at a movie theatre. The toys? Those are KAWS 4 foot companions and they’re hitting for A LOT of money these days. I got the dissected version around two years ago and the plain black OG one I acquired this year actually.

I wear these a lot. I wish I had 10 pairs. I don’t know why a dude like me loves animal print so much. But these are classics and will always be in my rotation of shoes—Chuck Taylors that is. I have a glitter pair too for when I’m sitting court side at the Lakers games.

When I first met Justin Bieber, it was at a studio and I was making him his grills. I brought some examples of fresh shit I had made and the koi fish was a personal piece that I made for myself but never showed or sold. Justin was in love and he had to have it. It’s 14 carats of VVS diamonds and he’s worn it many times, most importantly when I linked him up with world champion Floyd Mayweather at Floyd’s last fight in June and he rocked it on stage and all night. I have made pieces for Floyd Mayweather, as well, and he is probably my best customer to date. I made some sick diamond brooches for Michael Jackson before he passed away and a diamond belt buckle that he rocked while training for the 'This Is It' tour. I made some solid gold Beats by Dr. Dre headphones for Ocho Cinco and I have made some amazing Olympic Jewelry for eight-time Olympic medalist Apolo Ohno. I loved making Suri Cruise her first piece of Jewelry, which was a diamond nameplate 'Suri' and also made her dad, Tom Cruise, a sick iced out watch. I made Dwyane Wade some nice custom diamond initial charms which have got a lot of press during the NBA finals.

My go to drink obviously is rosé . I don’t know what it is, but my sister and my mother were big on wines and champagne so they taught me and then I evolved from there. But more specifically I would say Perrier Jouet Fleur Rosé or Dom Perignon Rosé. If they don’t have that, then I got to Moët Chandon Nectar Imperial Rosé; it’s really sweet and I can drink about 4 bottles to myself of that. As for Bars? I’m older now, so I’m not big on going out like I used to. I used to be a beast! I’d say someplace to have a nice drink now would be the Bel Air Hotel or the Polo Lounge. I have a few low key spots but I won’t blow those up! A memorable night going out was with my best friends and at my 36th birthday party at MyHouse nightclub. I was with my brother and best friend Jonas Bevacqua who passed away last year. It was maybe the last time me and all of my friends got really stupid. It was me, Jonas, my platinum motorsport family and Rob Kardashian. I ordered 6 bottles of Dom P Rosé Magnums at $2200 a bottle, then 2 Gran Platinum Patrón bottles at $2600 a bottle and then 4 bottles of Grey Goose Magnums at $900 a bottle. And I was so drunk and out of my mind that I was pouring bottles out on the floor and we had to have our own mop service clean up. I started to take my clothes off! The owner is a friend of mine, so he was okay when I took off my shirt, but when I took my pants off he had to intervene and be like, 'C’mon Ben! Really?' The bill came and I threw up. It was $27,000 and my credit card got declined. I had enough money, just not on the card. So I asked my boys to help, which I NEVER do and two of them gave me $5,000 each and were like, 'THIS WAS YOUR DUMB ASS IDEA!' I woke up feeling like melted shit, but I had a good time and I gave my boys their money back immediately. This was way before anyone was acting up like this. Now cats go hard in the clubs. But I’m older and will never do some silly shit like this again.

Those are vintage 1985 Nike Air Jordan—the shoe that really started it all! The shoes that were banned from the NBA and started the whole sneaker collecting craze. They are still in great shape! As for the $2 bills? I loved them since I was a youngster, and I would try to keep and save them, but I was never good at saving money until I got around 35 years of age. I also owned the largest collection of 1000% bearbricks on earth. I collected these since 2003 when the Kaws one dropped in Tokyo and ever since I've been hooked. I find these all over the country from London, Paris, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tokyo. Over the span of eight years, I acquired around 44 1000% size Bearbricks, including the ever-so-rare CHANEL x Karl Lagerfeld edition Bearbrick. (One of them was stolen!) These were a huge part of my life and art collection. I had to auction them off at Guy Hepner Gallery in March because I didn't have the space in our new house and I had to grow up.

I am proud to say that nobody iced out a fitted cap before and the inspiration just came from everyday life in the streets. Everyone rocked a fitted for decades until snapbacks came back. One of these was made for a Saudi prince and the other for a street cat. They’re both roughly 60 carats. The shoes are so detailed that I wonder why the fuck we never just made iced out sneakers and sold them (we have made a couple, but never Air Jordans).

This cross is the father and godfather of all crosses. Even if you hated Jesus or religion, you could still wear this cross. It’s immaculate! All VS1 F color stones and everything is like 99% consistent diamond wise. It’s 18k white gold and like 73 carats. I could see Floyd Mayweather wearing this cross. It’s so damn big, though. I have made a pavé version of this cross before for the rapper Fat Joe, but his was done in baby blue diamonds and white diamonds all pavé set. This is the slap you in the face type shit. Each corner of the center of this cross has a 1 carat princess cut solitaire diamond.

Since I was a youth, I always associated success with having a Rolex or BMW (now neither matter so much). I started in the Jewelry business in late 2005 and back then it was all about having a fully flooded diamond watch. Now I rarely wear a watch with diamonds unless it’s something subtle and factory made. I got into the business because of my obsession with watches and Dr. Dre bought me my first Rolex in 1997. From there it was history! Being in the music business and having worked on 20 platinum albums from 1994 to 2000 helped me build a big artist client list, so when I switched professions, it was easy to reel them in. I don’t care for much music these days and if I were in the music business today, I’d probably commit suicide. I didn’t work on anything music related when I exited the game, but in 2008, I got with Drake and helped out a little bit with some sequencing and motivational words. From then on, we’ve been bros and I think he is super talented!

No matter what I do or where I’m at, I need to always relate to my childhood and that is hip hop, so when I leave the house or hotel room, I need my vintage frames on - Cazals to be exact. It brings me back to 1985 when I couldn’t afford them and by the time I could, it didn’t mean much to others but myself, and hip hop culture is all about flossing and showing off. In 2008, when Louis Vuitton did the collab with Murakami, I remember hearing about it a little bit late and was in a meeting and left it to run down to get anything I could out of the monogramouflage collection; all I could get was this jacket and a mousepad. I use the jacket as often as I can, but it’s pretty loud. It’s reversible though, so I can use the all black side.

I think the last thing people think of when they see me or hear my name is a fresh car. The idea for the blinged out keys was spawned by rap sensation Pusha T. He was known for the rap quote, “Keys open doors.” We sat down at his hotel room going over details and made a set. The keys got so much love online that we made a personal set for myself. And yes, there is a valet feature on my keys. When I valet, they have limited access and I have programmed the key so that they can only drive 25 m/ph max.

Of course I designed these wedding bands myself! My wife is pretty simple and trusts my Jewelry tastes, so she just wanted them ice and white! I won’t lie, I got inspiration from Cartier and Van Cleef for our rings; they’re just timeless bands. I engraved 2-25-12 inside them because that was the day of our wedding; it was beautiful. We had it at Casa Del Mar on the beach and it was really intimate with strictly family and my closest friends, but we had some popular people, of course. We poured Veuve and Dom P rosé all night long and the food was excellent; it was the best night of my life. We got so many gifts! My boy Q (founder of Worldstar Hiphop) got us a $12,000 Louis Vuitton Jewelry case.

This was the transition of when I stopped wearing big truck jewels and kept it more classy and smaller with the better quality steez. Now I wear even smaller stuff, so I want to make a smaller BB chain eventually. Everyone always wonders where I got my name from, and it wasn’t from where they think. I played a lot of basketball growing up, so those guys were called “Ballers” in my area. In college, back in '92, the assistant coach nicked named me 'Ben Yang Baller.' Soon after, the term 'baller' meant someone who had cash and flash and all the above, so it kinda stuck. I've used it professionally and in 1999 I dropped the “Yang” part; just Ben Baller.

Hats, Unknown Designers

Hat, Just DON It; Case, Louis Vuitton

I came across $300 in $2 bills at a buddy of mine’s store and I had to have them! They’re so hard to find and these are sequenced! Shoes, Vintage Nike

I got this 3rd Eye Mickey Bearbrick from a very famous actor in Hong Kong, Edison Chen. He also owns a brand called CLOT, and it’s based there in China. He’s a big sneaker-head, streetwear ambassador and model. He’s connected big time! He has had a few 1000% Bearbrick collaborations, which is like a Bucket List thing for me to have or do. Hat, Unknown Designer

Keeping shoe boxes is a must. I used to do the clear box container with the Kimora Lee Polaroid-style swag, but that shit was for the birds. I’m a re-seller. No matter how much money I get or have, I will always flip kicks; it’s how I afforded most of everything I have now, including my Jewelry business! I like the classics like Converse Chuck Taylors or Vans authentic. If it’s something new or contemporary, then it’s Supra for sure, but lately I’ve been wearing loafers (Yeah B.B. is rocking loafers now) like Tod’s or old Gucci ones. Cream Shoes, Lanvin; Leopard Shoes, Christian Louboutin

I’ve been rocking caps and snapbacks way before the cool kids did, but I win by default for being old. I love my Supreme hats. The older ones were better. I like my OG Raiders and Kings hats because that’s true L.A. gangster shit. Nowadays I get most of my hats from Hall of Fame. I used to be a huge Supreme-head in the 90s and early 2000s, but now not so much. Lakers? C’mon. Wars in my life have been dictated from the outcome of Lakers game scores! Hats, Various Designers

Pendant, IF & Co.

Pendant, IF & Co.

That’s Tera Patrick - the famous porn star and I believe Terry Richardson shot that for Supreme. The ash tray was a gift from my wife on father’s day. The dice? 9 carats of white diamonds and another carat in black diamonds and they are official casino size dice. I use them only to make people hate their lives.

My boy Angel sent these to me and had them made for a few select A-list clients. I think Pete Wentz got some and I got a pair. They have croc skin on them. Being endorsed by Supra helps! The Warhol I acquired from a friend of a friend about eight years ago and it’s like money in the bank... or having a gold bar. Shoes, Supra

Top Row (Left to Right): Watches, Audemars Piguet; Custom G-Shock by IF & Co., Breitling; Bottom Row (Left to Right): Rolex, Rolex, Rolex

L to R. Top Row. Watches, Audemars Piguet; Custom G-Shock by IF & Co., Breitling, Bottom Row, Rolex, Rolex, Rolex, Rolex; Varsity Jacket, Roots x OVO; Army Jacket, Louis Vuitton; Shoes, Nike; Glasses, Vintage Cazal; Jewelry, IF & Co.

Varsity Jacket, Roots x OVO; Army Jacket, Louis Vuitton; Diamond Keys, IF & Co.

Rings, IF & Co.

These were a gift from my friend James Bond (owner/founder of UNDEFEATED) and I am a fan of the history of Missoni. The painting? This is actually just a $350 print in a $600 frame; only an idiot pays more for a frame. I got it because it was so big and covered a big space in my old condo. I am really bummed out that our huge Albert Watson portrait of Kate Moss wasn’t ready to shoot for this interview. That’s what is there now and it was taken when Kate Moss was 15 and Albert autographed the portrait. Shoes, Converse x Missoni

Don C is Kanye’s best friend and partner. These are only sold at RSVP gallery in Chicago and you have to check out that store if you’re ever in Chicago! It’s fucking dope! It’s my favorite NFL team on a classic snapback (replaced by a python skin adjuster) and the whole brim of the cap is wrapped in real Python and it’ll hit you for $500+. As for Kanye, we’re cool, we’re friends. I had the most epic Jewelry collaboration with him and his pastel line, but I can’t talk about it really because the company no longer exists. Hat, Just DON It

I carry the essential things I need for work and just everyday bullshit in this. I have membership cards, Carmex and gum/mints. If I have to transport parcels of diamonds or pieces, this is the perfect size bag to use. It actually holds up to about $75,000 if I need it to! Case, Louis Vuitton

I just wanted to make a piece at the time with our logo on it. The shoe is a fully iced-out Converse Chuck Taylor, and it’s completely micro pave. We have made too many ill items to list: Bentley shift knobs,100 carat diamond life-size 7Up cans and even mustard bottles. We even made a real 9 carat iced-out Chapstick! I made a 5” panda bear in diamonds and gold and it weighed 2 pounds. There’s also my 330 carat diamond state of California piece! As for these bottles, they're Andy Warhol-edition Dom P. I love Veuve for the regular days and Dom P for the special nights. Necklace, IF & Co.

World famous artist Mister Cartoon did this tattoo and it’s about four years now in the making and still not done. On the left side, there will be street sign of the Koreatown street that I grew up on, bottles of Crown Royal, beers and shit like that. Then on the right side, the Beverly Hills city sign and bottle of Dom and Cris to show the rags to riches story. I am planning on getting my son’s name tatted on me very soon, too. Necklace, IF & Co.

When I travel, I always take a couple jackets: one light and one kinda heavy. I hate the cold and honestly I don’t travel to places under 55 degrees unless there is at least a six-figure check for me, and then it’s only for two days max. But when I do hit the cold, I bring my OVO varsity jacket with me that Drake gave me. Jacket, Roots x OVO

When I first made this, I wore it all the time; every single day. I jumped in the pool with it on! It’s my BB logo chain! I will give it to my son one day. Necklace, IF & Co.

Fresh sneakers have always been a part of me since 1981 when I got my first pair of SKY FORCE I’s and so I always have something to shit on folks with. These were a gift from CRSVR boutique and Nike and they’re the rarest sneaker to release this year. It drove people insane and fools were getting shot and stabbed over these Nike Galaxy Foamposites! Shoes, Nike

This is in our son’s bedroom/nursery and I felt the lithograph and pillow made sense. I got the pillow at Colette in Paris and the litho, my wife bought at the MOCA show years back when Murakami had his exhibition there. My son, London, already has diamond chains and a Rolex, but I’m gonna start him off easy. Maybe when he turns five I’ll give him that Frank Lopez (Scarface) swagger. As for clothing, he’s got custom Supras, baby Dior shoes and clothes, baby Gucci, baby Hermès and of course the basic Target brand onesies so he can feel regular. After my Coveteur shoot, this LV Camo made the popular page on Instagram and a guy made an offer I couldn’t refuse. I got a lot of use of it, so it’s on to someone else now. I love Murakami and KAWS - my 2 favorite living artists out now. Jacket, Louis Vuitton

These are vintage Cazal 616 frames from the 80’s and made with snakeskin! I got these from my boy in Montreal Corey Shapiro of Vintage Frames Co. He is the largest vintage eyewear dealer on earth. I wear them only for special occasions, like eating a hamburger. I can cook, but I don’t. My wife cooks mostly because she’s a vegetarian and can’t eat what I eat. The Le Creuset pot set was a wedding gift from my boy, Nick Diamond, and if you know about culinary shit, then you know every swag cook from Thomas Keller to Giada De Laurentiis has a set of these. Even Oprah is rocking with these! As for favorite restaurants? Damn, there are too many! I frequent places like Bottega Louie or the Polo Lounge and Robata Jinya. When I want a great bowl of pasta, it’s gotta be La Scala or Mauros Café. If you live in L.A., you’re lucky to have such a wide selection of fine foods. But next time you’re in town, check out Mario’s Peruvian. So good! Sunglasses, Vintage Cazal
