Brian Gluckstein

Interior Designer and CEO, Gluckstein Design Planning Inc. and GlucksteinHome Inc. Toronto

We caught up with our Canadian design guru—Mr. Brian Gluckstein—and Fashion Television (R.I.P.) came along for the ride to document the results. Gluckstein greeted us wearing his signature specs and then proceeded to give us the grand tour. Him being the principal designer of Gluckstein Design and Gluckstein Home, we knew that we were in for a treat—not to mention an education in Interiors 101. If you’ve ever been to The Four Seasons in Toronto or Palm Beach, you’ve seen his award-winning work. His knack for mixing timeless treasures with contemporary design is a constant in his projects, as well as within his own home. Once we got a glimpse inside Gluckstein’s immaculately-organized closet, we realized that it was an instant contender for “The Coveteur Awards.” From his colour-coordianted cashmere sweaters (B.G. swears by Tuscan-based brand, Cucinelli) to his camel-coloured shoes, Gluckstein’s closet was one that advocated organization and thoughtfulness. The last time we saw shirts that perfectly folded was at Banana Republic—oh, and inside Vogue’s Sara Brown’s closet. But there’s a method to his madness: Gluckstein’s (unofficial) “Guide to Footwear” illustrates three important rules: “Never wear the same pair two days in a row; polish them after every wear; and always use a shoe tree to re-block the shoe.” Got that, kids? (Pretty sure Tommy Hilfiger read that book a few times—his shoe closet followed every one of those guidelines.) Gluckstein guided us into his most sacred place: the bathroom—which was surrounded with holy bibles…er, books. Based on the belief that “…it’s the first room you go into and the last one before bed,” Gluckstein focuses on comfort and tranquility. He’s even got chair made of terrycloth for post-bath time lounging; can you say ‘amazing’?

I have a few shoe rules: Never wear the same pair two days in a row; polish them after every wear; and always use a shoe tree to re-block the shoe, hold the shape and remove any moisture. Follow these rules and your shoes will last forever. I always look at shoes on men first. Beautiful shoes set the tone for an entire outfit—whether they’re worn with jeans or a suit. Like all of my clothes, I organize shoes by color.

I love camel: it's chic and goes with everything. In Italy and France, all the men wear camel shoes with jeans or suits. It’s also important to have gorgeous belts to match them with.

Blue is my favourite color and bathrooms are my favourite rooms—both in my own home and the spaces I design for. It’s the first room you go into and the last one before bed. Every bathroom should have a fireplace. These terry chairs are so practical and fun.

I like to collect ties, but don’t wear them very often. I do love Hermès but, for me, it’s more about the fabric and the color than the brand.

I love architectural models and this English antique staircase model is part of my collection. Hermès (along with Ferragamo) is my favourite leather company and they excel at discreet and beautiful craftsmanship. The Hermès 'H' belts are classic. Hammered gold, polished silver, brown or black enamel—I love them all. This photo reminded me that I need to send these out to be polished.

I love colored sweaters in the winter because the bleaker it gets, the more important it is to perk up with colour. You get a great reaction when you wear a pop of orange cashmere in February.

This is a two-story library that I feel is the 'wow' room in the house. The antique 18th century desk was a gift from my parents when I bought my first house. It was in my father’s library when I was growing up, as was the silver boat model. The Greek vases are from the estate of Gianni Versace and were a gift from my friend Lou Strauss in memory of the time we spent in Gianni’s Florida home. It’s one of the most special gifts I’ve ever received.

The Gucci loafer is classic and timeless. It’s so perfect with jeans. The range hood is made of chalkboard to write recipes and notes. It also has a ledge to display books while cooking. I love open shelves in the kitchen. I don’t actually cook, but my partner Gary is the best cook.

The vanity in the bathroom is more like a furniture piece, and I used lamps instead of typical wall lights. The room relates to the rest of the house and it’s really an extension of the design perspective. The blazer is British Glen Check with a twist by Kiton. I wear this in Palm Beach. The belts are made in Paris and I buy them in Palm Beach. They have amazing colors; I have so many.

This hallway didn’t exist in the house when we bought it. I wanted to create a beautiful sightline to the garden and make it feel as though there is like a courtyard in the middle of the house. The sweaters are Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli. Both are masters of sophisticated colour. One of my strengths as a designer is being sensitive to the nuances of color; similarly, I’m sensitive to colors in clothing.

I tend to wear sweaters instead of blazers or put a blazer over my sweater. I love Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli. I've visited Brunello Cucinelli’s workshops in Tuscany and have such an appreciation for the work: everything is hand-knitted, hand-dyed and will last forever. It’s truly clothing that endures.
