CHANEL's The Little Black Jacket Book

CHANEL's The Little Black Jacket Book

 New York

We have a lengthy history of CHANEL collabs: we’ve been flown to Paris to peep Coco Chanel’s apartment,, see the Paris-Bombay show, tour the Massaro, visit the Joaillerie, and ventured inside the closet of muses like Hudson Kroenig and Les Fidèles’ Jen Brill. Our latest project celebrates a timeless classic that has been reinvented and reinterpreted by Karl and Carine. As highlighted in this project and the book, CHANEL's Little Black Jacket remains to be a dynamic staple that can be worn by anyone, any way. In light of the highly anticipated release of The Little Black Jacket—a coffee-table book by Lagerfeld and Roitfeld—our friends at CHANEL reached out to us to shoot a promotional piece that showcases the women behind the jacket. We hit up our Little Black Book and contacted some of N.Y.C.’s most stylish chicks from the fashion sphere to contemporary art circles. Upon our arrival, we headed over to catch up with past Coveteur W Magazine’s Karla Martinez—who had just returned from the book’s launch in Tokyo. While her glam squad did her hair and make-up, Mrs. Martinez raved on and on about the book’s appeal. From there, we cruised across town to Style.com’s Marina Larroudé's pad. Next up, we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge to visit the very cool (and very pregnant!) Casey Fremont Crowe, Director of the Art Production Fund. We then hit up Sara Friedlander from Christie’s, where we were fed matzah Brie (it was still Passover!) by Father Frieds. After that, we visited another Style.com legend, Nicole Phelps, before visiting Town & Country’s (and formerly Vogue's) Sophie Pera. Finally, we ended it all at stylist/shoe designer, Tabitha Simmons’s. Like the book, our roster of women demonstrates “the astounding versatility of CHANEL's vision” and how multiple women, each with their own individual flair, can wear such an adaptable and lasting garment.

I loved this jacket the moment I saw the model Brad and his three-year-old son wearing it down the runway in September 2010. This jacket is unmistakably CHANEL, inside and out. It has a vintage quality to it; you don’t quite know what season it might be from. Perhaps the best part is that it can be worn with almost anything: I have worn this jacket to work, to parties, on a plane, with jeans, with dresses, or with skirts. It’s so easy and makes you feel as if you’re that quintessentially stylish French friend you have who always looks so chic and makes you jealous!

This is pretty much the uniform for my life: jeans, T-shirt, blazer. I love adding colour to anything, and an oversized Marni necklace—along with my new wedding ring—is the go-to accessory. This jacket is perfection because it works for everything: I could wear it out with silk shorts, or to the office with white wide-legged trousers.

I actually wore this look all day following the photo shoot. From the shoot I went to a school event, a meeting regarding my shoe line, followed by a run through at Vogue and on to cocktails after. What I love about the CHANEL tweed jacket is that—in my mind—you can wear it anywhere and anytime.

A blazer, a T-shirt, and a pair of skinny jeans—that's my idea of the perfect outfit. I always get compliments when I wear red, so this was an easy choice to pick out of the selection that CHANEL and The Coveteur brought over. What’s cool about this jacket is that while it looks like I’ve layered a red and black tweed over a plain black one, it’s actually one piece; that clever Karl.

Sometimes I think I might be the love child of Peter Marino and Coco Chanel—and this picture qualifies as my birth certificate. My leather gold-studded pants are men’s Versace for H&M. I found my cap in a tiny vintage store in the Marais. The jacket and pearls are classic CHANEL heaven.

CHANEL is classic, chic, perfection. CHANEL is feminine and strong, and it captures the modern woman. I wore gorgeous CHANEL gladiator sandals on my wedding day, and would wear CHANEL every single day if I could. Betty (the Cavapoo) and Penelope (the chocolate Labradoodle) are our beloved creatures. My husband and I are completely obsessed and madly in love with them.

This open-back CHANEL jacket is such an unexpected take on the classic CHANEL jacket! To make it more appropriate for day-time, I paired it with my Current/Elliot distressed jeans, and my favourite jewels: Repossi’s Berbère earrings and Wilfredo Rosado's cameo ring. For another unexpected hint of colour I wore my CH by Carolina Herrera lilac pumps, and last but not least, one of my favourite bags: the classic 2.55 in white patent; it used to belong to my mother and I asked to borrow it for my honeymoon—but almost a decade later I still haven’t returned it!

I would wear this CHANEL jacket in the summer with a pair of white shorts and a tank. I would just fling this jacket over my shoulders and it would look great. My motto is, If it has a double C on it, then chances are I love it.

The Little Black Jacket book is truly inspiring. It's styled by Carine Roitfeld, shot by Karl Lagerfeld, and features only one jacket worn by the most incredible personalities. Such a great idea! And the jackets...I wish I had hidden them at my house after the photo shoot! Karl is a master at tweaking the classic CHANEL jacket into something modern and cool.

My husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas one year and I told him that I really wanted a classic CHANEL tweed jacket. He bought me a black coat with a zipper up the front and I took it back to the shop and chose this one. It feels amazing on and I have had it for years. They never go out of fashion.

Our collection spans photography, prints and ceramics, but contemporary painting is what most excites me most in the art world today. With the vast array of multimedia available in our digital world, it’s nice to see such expression in the century-old medium of paint. This painting, "Drop City", is by German artist Till Gerhard, and depicts the failed realization of a Utopian artists' community in Colorado.

Normally I am not a pastel girl, but I’ll do lilac if it's CHANEL. In my fantasy life I'd wear this to the beach thrown over a bikini with pearls hanging down my back à la Sara Murphy. For the office, this would be perfect over one of my linen Loro Piana men's shirts and my favourite leather pants—grandma biker-chic.

Every CHANEL show is an event, but the one that stands out for me is the resort collection I covered in Saint-Tropez—the one where the models arrived by boat and Georgia May Jagger—channeling Brigitte Bardot—made her final exit on a motorcycle. The night before the show, CHANEL shut down the village square, Place des Lices, for a giant pétanque match: the kind of unforgettable moment that fashion—and especially CHANEL—creates all the time.

The definition of a classic is something that each person can take and make her own; of course we all know that a CHANEL jacket is the ultimate classic, and now finally there's a tribute in print that looks as great on my coffee table as a CHANEL jacket does on a chic woman. Karl Lagerfeld is obviously my style muse.

I love this layered style: the classic CHANEL tweed with a business blazer is absolute perfection; I’m so into contemporary interpretations of classic pieces. The kitchen is 100% my husband’s territory; he’s a fabulous chef—he's also the owner of The Crowe Company, his Brooklyn-based catering business—and is always cooking up yummy snacks. I’m very lucky!

I am the director of the Art Production Fund. We produce and commission ambitious public art projects. In my nearly eight years with APF I have had the opportunity to work with incredible artists like Aaron Young and Kalup Linzy, whose work I’m so happy to live with. The painting on the right side is by the super-talented emerging artist Matias Cuevas; it was a wedding gift, and I am obsessed with it! Karl has been able to carry on the classic look established by Coco so long ago, while his designs today determine the look of contemporary fashion. He is a genius and a legend.

I think every girl, the minute she’s old enough to dress herself, dreams about wearing a piece of CHANEL—especially the iconic jacket. What this girl has discovered is that CHANEL can be worn in so many different ways: I love wearing my jackets with more casual pieces, say a flirty skirt, silk trousers either cropped or wide leg.

These jackets are timeless and gorgeous. I am so in love with all things CHANEL; I think the tweed would look perfect paired with torn light denim and simple Belgian loafers or ballet flats. I think it's best to keep the rest of the outfit simple and chic when wearing something so perfect. The decks are Supreme collaborations with artists Larry Clark, Marilyn Minter, Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons. I’ve had them for years and all were gifts from my good friend, the super talented designer and Supreme collaborator, Alex Dymond.
