Charlotte Ronson

Designer. New York

Oh, to be a Ronson. While our dreams of becoming an extended member of this talented family aren’t going to happen anytime soon, our next best bet is, in our opinion, playing with their personal treasures. We went inside Charlotte Ronson’s NYC pad, where we got to witness first hand all the accessories and frocks that help make Ronson’s coveted style the definition of rock-and-roll-cool.
Born in London and raised in New York, Ronson interned at places like Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar and a myriad of fashion labels, where she began to hone her design skills. She began customizing her own vintage tees, her friends took notice, and shortly thereafter, she launched her first collection, C.Ronson – which eventually lead to her namesake collection of dynamic womenswear.
She’s since collaborated with Urban Outfitters, JCPenney, and Uniqlo, and recently, she teamed up with Sephora for Charlotte Ronson Beauty – a line of cosmetics that channel the versatile designers aesthetic. “Prints are a big part of my design aesthetic, and a great floral will add that feminine and flirty quality that I’m always drawn to. They balance an otherwise edgy look,” says Ronson, who loves a good eBay find.
But in her design process, it’s all about exploring different areas – from the rough around the edges East Village mentality to the sophistication of decades of the past. “I love exploring different eras when I design. Grunge has really become a singular influence, and I like exploring the nuances of the era. The Spring ‘12 collection is a modern take on the 20’s Victorian era. The demure details and soft color palettes are offset by denim and patchwork elements from the restless grunge decade”. But at the end of the day, it’s a family affair, and her apartment is adorned with jewelry designed by her mother, bags she’s ‘borrowed’ from her sister Annabelle and Tom Binns gems gifted by Samantha. Come on in and take a look around, and remember, look…don’t touch.

These Illesteva Sunglasses are designed by Annabelle and her boyfriend André Saraiva. They are being worn by a figure that Samantha gave me. She’s a huge toy collector, and I like anything pink, cute and girly. The little heart pasties and pink detail are very cute.

I love the embroidery on this cute slip - I wear it in the summer as a cover up. I love the attention to detail that my friend Nicole Richie used to make this House of Harlow clutch special.

I had always wanted to expand to beauty, but I knew I wanted to be able to translate my design aesthetic in an authentic way. Sephora introduced the best formulas for the kind of products that I was interested in creating.

This clutch was a unique find for me because I’m not usually drawn to leopard prints. But this Alaïa is different: it has a great shape and the leopard is fun - not cheesy or very serious. It’s very well done. I wore it for the first time to a charity event.

As far as work goes, there isn’t really a set schedule as there is always so much going on, and I’m involved in very different projects. I meet with my team everyday, especially when we are starting a new season.

I love this Tom Binns bracelet as it’s sort of an anomaly: it’s very ladylike, but the skulls give it an unexpected edge. It was a gift from my sister Samantha.

I feel so fortunate to have these photographs. They were both taken by family friends- which makes them all the more important to me. The photo of Kate Moss is by Harry Benson, and the photo to its right is by Pamela Hansen.

This clutch is special to me because I wore it to my brother Mark’s wedding in Provence. When you open it one side is a mirror - which makes it really beautiful and functional.

This clutch belongs to my little sister, Annabelle. She left it here, and I think it looks quite nice on my shelf. It’s a vintage book jacket for A Streetcar Named Desire. The photos to the left of it are some of my favorite by my friend Pamela Hansen. The Kate Moss photo is from a shoot for Harper’s Bazaar: I’ve had since I was just starting out.

Prints are a big part of my design aesthetic, and a great floral will add that feminine and flirty quality that I’m always drawn to. They balance an otherwise edgy look. Aside from floral prints in my collection, I love shopping for vintage pieces. For great finds I use eBay, and I love Scout in Los Angeles.

I’ve never worn this dress, but it looks like a decorative piece in itself. My mother goes through her closet from time to time and gives away pieces she no longer wears. She’s given me a few great vintage dresses that I really love.

The shirt is from my Spring ’11 collection, paired with a necklace that was a gift from my mother’s trip to India. It’s a great piece to dress-up a T-shirt, or add a bit of glamour to a casual look. I love the shape of the stones, and the hint of color.
