Claire Distenfeld

Owner of Fivestory. New York

With our apologies to Buzzfeed, it's time for us to have a little "If You Grew Up in the '90s…" moment of our own. '90s (and '80s) kids with working moms will totally recall watching your mom take off each morning in coordinating suit sets, quickly earning the ensemble a rep that placed it firmly in the realm of well, mom regalia. Fast forward over a decade, as we found ourselves outside of Claire Distenfeld's Manhattan home, carefully studying her coordinating Peter Pilotto shirt-and-skirt set. While we'd never exactly envisioned ourselves adding matchy-matchy suit sets to our shopping lists, if anyone would convince us to reconsider our position, it would naturally be Distenfeld. After taking off for Fivestory's Valentine's Day party with Alison Chemla, leaving us alone to pore through her wardrobe, we discovered coordinates-a-plenty by the likes of Pilotto, Preen, and Vika Gazinskaya.

As the owner of Fivestory (deemed by the press to be the Upper East Side's answer to Colette) Distenfeld is a passionate proponent of emerging design talent, stocking both her wardrobe and boutique with names like Josh Goot, Creatures of the Wind and Ostwald Helgason. The space, designed by Cov-alum Ryan Korban, offers a well-curated selection of interesting home décor and art, harkening back to Distenfeld's days in the art world, as do the Baron von Fancy scribbles literring the walls. "Fivestory is all about balance," she told us. "We are the bridge between a timeless old school world where decadence and elegance reign, and a contemporary ever-evolving, always changing wit and charm."

We only fell harder for Distenfeld as we toured her home, from her printed vintage wallpaper to her flespradrille wedges. Like us, Distenfeld goes hard in the arena of personal fragrances, telling us that her signature scent is actually a custom made Le Labo blend, "It's a take of their Santal 33, which I use as my laundry detergent, moisturizer and shampoo. For my home scent I use Diptyque Figuier room spray and candles." She also has a serious soft spot for a lip print, as evidenced by the Del Toro loafers and throwback Prada blouse we found kicking around among her collection of vintage couture. But it was the needlepoint pillow emblazoned with her moniker that pretty much sealed the deal—Distenfeld's a girl after our own (mono-glammed) heart!
