There is a satin belt that ties under the bust [of the coat]. It is probably an all-time favorite coat of mine. Who needs another evening coat? I got this coat in the summer 2005 when I left Harper's Bazaar to move to L.A. I wore the coat to host [an event for] Kilian Hennessey when he lauched his fragrance line, By Kilian. The dress is made of bird feathers and rhinestones. Naeem said to me, 'You have to take this dress! It’s so tiny. It doesn’t fit anyone else.' I took it to L.A. to wear to a black tie birthday party (that I also wore the Charlotte Olympia clutch to). I ended up in Valentino and my cousin Jane Ross (also a stylist!) wore the dress.

I’m not a bag girl. I’m a shoe girl. I’ve never heard a guy say to me that’s a sexy purse, but have been hit on many times just because of my shoes. I spend a lot of time in the studio services at Barneys (aka my Messiah). She was a one off. I think Barneys New York hadn’t gotten that color but she was somehow sent from Boston. I’d like to think she’s pretty sexy. Oh, and the fireplace has it’s perks with guys, too.

These sapphire blue heels were a prize for competing in a 'runway walk-off' hosted by Holt Renfrew and judged by Jay Alexander from Top Model. According to the manager at Ilori in Toronto, these indigo shades were specially ordered for rocker Geddy Lee. Until I move to Paris, I surround myself with cheesy mementos. At least this striped Eiffel Tower came from a recent Colette installation. My mother wore the medallion necklace when she was a teenager.

Oh, you’ve discovered my jazz hands fetish. My assistants actually went and bought a top hat and a tails-coat because I ask for them for shoots repeatedly. One-trick pony… The hat actually came down the catwalk in Badgley Mischka’s runway show for fall 2011. I’m insane about these shoes. The clutches are sparkly and jazz-hands so they get double love, except that they are too small to actually fit a credit card.

I got these right at the end of the Barneys sale and the nice shoe man there insisted I get them rather than some other rather unflattering ones that I was obsessing about. He was right. I’m really into Victoriana and Edwardian pieces but worn in an uncostumey way. These boots are perfect with a skinny jean and my jet fringed Victorian mourning cape – sort of rock and roll meets The Piano. I like clothes that tell a story, even if its only a story in my head. One of Merriam Webster’s definitions of Romantic is 'having no basis in fact'.

The dress is vintage 1930's. I love lace! It was unlined when I got it. My alterations lady is a genius and also has a passion for vintage (she does restorations for the V&A Museum in London) and suggested that we left the top of the dress unlined, which I’m really glad we did. I’ve worn it (with flats) to parties at friend’s houses in the Hamptons – it’s really great for swishing around on a dancefloor.
