Emily Current

Stylist; Consultant; Entrepreneur. Los Angeles

Los Angeles-based stylist, consultant and designer Emily Current met her business partner in crime Meritt Elliott while they were both attending UCLA working towards obtaining their respective degrees in Sociology. While doing so, they realized their passions were more aligned with vintage shops and Karl Lagerfeld rather than Karl Marx and Durkheim. They joined forces, and set up shop as a styling duo - tackling California beauties one by one.
Their no-nonsense work ethic and carefully trained eyes started capturing the attention of the music industry (they worked on Fiona Apple’s tour – just THAT alone makes them Coveteurable) and slowly but surely, the work started to flow in. They established themselves as MAUDE, a fashion alias they created, and have been tag-teaming the world of fashion for over a decade. We first noticed their boundary-pushing spreads in Nylon Magazine editorials, and when the "boyfriend jean" craze took over the world a few seasons ago, all fingers were pointed at Emily and Meritt for its uprising. How might you ask? Having shopped for denim for years and years and unable to find the perfect pair of jeans, they began buying vintage jeans, ripping them up, tailoring them to their exact specifications, resulting in a more modern fit. They would rock their DIY creations (Erica Domesek are you listening?) on set, and shortly thereafter, Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, Mary Kate Olsen and Megan Fox were calling them up asking where they could get their hands on these unique styles that made a serious impression in an already oversaturated market. Hence, CURRENT/ELLIOTT was born - and is now flourishing with a line of casual outerwear.
We visited Emily in her LA home and dug through her killer collection of cream lace dresses, Miu Miu 1990's geometric pumps, and of course, her overflowing collection of vintage American denim. But it's her father’s jean jacket from the late 50's with a hand-painted portrait of Fred Flintstone that is her most sentimental possession. Lesson learned? What starts with denim ends with denim…

This wall is filled with little treasures! The jacket reminds me of confetti or maybe a Navajo headdress or perhaps a Mexican basket. It is a true piece of art. The turquoise snakeskin [pumps] are so pretty with tan legs and a white dress (lord knows I have a few of those) The bag is such a treat in tomato red! Long live bright accessories!

These flats really are a conversation piece and usually drum up a comment or two about the giant pearl between your toes! "How do those stay on your fee"' you ask? Magic! I often throw them in my handbag in case I am in need of a midday shoe swap.

Every time I order a bouquet of flowers this is what is delivered. Pshaw! I wish. These shoes are business in the front and party in the back. I really think they are just stunning! Look at the gold sole. Scrumptious.

I see some themes here in my shoe closet…Gold, glitter, leopard, studs! I swear - these are all shoes I actually wear. Especially the nude platform Miu Miu pumps- they are my go-with-everything shoes. Miu Miu makes the most comfortable heels- that’s why I own so darn many. Hooray for being a girl!

My ode to Miuccia photo. I am clearly a fan! These shoes look especially charming sitting on frou frou furry pillows. Glitter is the perfect pairing with vintage denim- don’t let anyone tell you otherwise (just make sure the glitter isn’t ON the denim)! I can barely walk in them but I look sparkly while hobbling about. The clutch I had to own because the leather was very 'daytime' and casual but the gems were so 'evening'-it made for a nice dichotomy. I remember this gem bag in gold and other fancier leathers and it was just this particular one that spoke to me!

This jacket is unbelievably warm. The color is fantastically original for fur (faux of course). The Cuban heeled boots are so fun to wear. I often find myself Googling Zanotti to try to find these boots in other colors and/or materials. They are very sixties dandy rock n’ roll which speaks to me!

Two things you should know about me. 1) I love rust colored suede shoes because I can mix them with dressier things and they make me feel like I am trying less hard, and 2) I collect vintage rock tees (and Harley tees) because I can mix them with dressier things and they ALSO make me feel like I am trying less hard. I am obviously trying really hard to not try hard.

I loved this 'For Like Ever' lithograph so much I had it framed years ago and despite its PINK-ness it really works in many different rooms! The vintage beaded lace shift is more mod 1960’s in silhouette than my usual style. I bought it after seeing the movie 'Down With Love' and decided that I too could channel a campy, Doris Day, coiffed look. I’m not sure I ever really pulled that off though.

The ode to Miu Miu madness continues with these radiant teal platform pumps! I have these in a bunch of colors! They didn’t do this shoe this season like they have the past few. I am starting a petition to bring them back. Wanna sign?

The pictures above the globe are really special to me. One is of me as a baby with giant 70’s headphones on and above it my husband as a baby with giant 70’s headphones on. The vintage voile dress spoke to me because the lace detail on the top resembles suspenders. The gold Comey boots are again a take on Cuban heeled boots, which I have developed a bit of an obsession for.

[The shoes] are circa the 90’s. I first bought the orange ones and really managed to wear them quite a bit so when I saw the green version on sale I went for it. That’s the thing about a classic pump shape, they really stay in fashion and you can get wild with the material and color! I need to resurrect these with jeans and a white shirt! And wow how they magnify how bright my kitchen tile is!

Well this is my goth nun look! These boots are really something else! They seem to be very controversial. Either you love or hate. For me it was a romance. The dress is vintage. Nothing quite like a Peter Pan collar to look put together. The gold vine headband I got in a tiny town called Paia in Maui at a store called Tamara Katz. I’ve worn it to a few events and it really livens up a simple black dress!

These built-in shelves in my bedroom house a lot of pottery and a few favorite rock photos. Love myself some John and Yoko! The bronze boots are very high! But I am 5’3” so the higher the better! I should leave them on the shelf, they look dashing with the bronze Jonathan Adler pottery!

This bag is ingenious. It’s an oversized clutch but there is also a cross body strap inside that makes it oh-so-functional. I copied it from Meritt. She has it in another color. Good work Meritt! The giant gem necklace's stones remind me of my birthstone: yellow topaz. How bummed was I as a little girl?) I have grown to really love it! The snakeskin suitcase I found at Wasteland in LA and practically climbed up the racks to grab it.

This is singlehandedly the most sentimental piece of clothing I own. It was my Dad’s jacket he wore in middle school in the late 50’s. He painted the Fred Flinstone on the back. The worn wash, the double buckle back and the fact it is selvedge make it even more beautiful to me now. I cherish it for many reasons! The studded short cowboy boots are from Resurrection on Melrose. I wear them more than you would think.

I love the cotton athletic-like waistband on such a formal skirt. It also has black stitching throughout which is really genius! I wear it with Harley tees. These boots I bought a few years back when we were working with Fiona Apple on her tour for Extraordinary Machine. Fiona doesn’t wear leather so we got really into Stella’s vegan accessories. They are so Tim Burton with the skirt.

This is my favorite room in the house with the tube amp tuner and all the pictures my husband and I have collected- from vintage photos to Ernst Haeckel drawings. The short lace dress is my all time favorite dress. I got it in a vintage store in Paris many years ago. I love to wear it with a black slip and black tights! The DVF dress I wore to a charity event for Phase One Cancer Research and I felt very Grecian.

There are a few certainties about my wardrobe. I don’t own a ton of colored clothing but I own a truckload of bright and colorful accessories. This Fendi bag I got in NY over this past fashion week at Barneys on a whim. I absolutely LOVE it! These glasses are Retrosuperfuture. They are a hybrid of John Lennon round, cat eye and wayfarer.
