Eugene Tong

Senior Style Editor, Details Magazine. New York

Eugene Tong's career in fashion wasn't intentional. In fact, it was a complete accident.
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Tong moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and attended Boston University, until he moved to New York City upon graduating... jobless. While taking on the task of job hunting, he became increasingly bored with his mission, and decided to take on a fun internship while he continued his search. He landed at FHM Magazine, where he was eventually promoted to their freelance fashion assistant.

Tong stayed at FHM for a year and a half, until Bruce Pask asked him to join his team at Cargo Magazine. Tong was now the Accessories Market Editor at Cargo, and was deep-rooted in his accidental fashion editorial career. From Cargo, he ended up at Details Magazine, where for the past five years he held the title of Paris and American Sportswear Market Editor, a role he mastered for the past 5+ years. Tong was recently promoted to the publications Senior Style Editor, a well-deserved role that he continues to excel at, gracing the pages with the latest picks from the world of men's fashion.

I met Ryder a few years ago through my friend Audrey. Aside from being a great friend, he also happens to be a super talented up-and-coming artist. As you can see he is extremely talented and I always joke with him that my hope is to put my kids through college with these sketches. As for the paper clips, it all started one summer during the Milan shows. I received my Dolce & Gabbana invite and it had the coolest looking gold squared off paper clip. I really liked it and started wearing it on the front placket of my button downs. When the weather started getting colder, I switched it to the lapel of my blazers. I just like the way it looks so I have started wearing them everyday. People always ask me what they are and they are always surprised when I tell them they are just paper clips. Soon after, good friends and people who knew about it started giving me interesting looking paper clips so now I have a small collection of them.

Picked up surfing at the end of [one] summer and became obsessed. Been wanting to try it for years. I always dreamed of stepping on a board for the first time and discovering that I am a surfing prodigy. That didn’t quite happen but I will get there. The Limited Edition Rusty Board with Rogan Graphics was a gift from my friend Kevin Harter at Bloomingdales. He commissioned these a few years ago and gifted me when he heard about my new obsession. My goal is to be able to ride this board one day.

Luckily, since my job doesn’t require me to wear a suit everyday, I can still appreciate a beautifully made suit. I picked this one up in Paris. There really is nothing easier than a well-made, well-fitting suit to make a man look extra handsome. I always feel a little more confident when I have a suit on.

I love a handkerchief or pocket square. Aside from being very useful, its great way to add some color or personality. I always have one in my back left pants pocket or in my chest pocket of my jackets and blazers.

The funny thing is that I have a huge stack of scarves and I still just use the same three or four.

The key to this Y-3 jacket is the little removable striped tap on the collar. It’s a cool detail and it also doubles as a great sunglasses holder.
