Garance Doré

Garance Dore

Fashion Photographer; Writer; Illustrator; Editor, garancedore.fr. New York

Garance Doré needs no introduction. The streetstyle snapper emerged on the scene in the early days of the blogger boom and remains to be an influential force in the burgeoning field. Along with her photographer boyfriend, Scott Schuman, they rule the sidewalk runway as the reigning King and Queen or rather, Brangelina of streetstyle photography. With everyone getting in on the blogosphere, it was refreshing to talk with one of the founding members of the movement. She even does regular guest lecturing at the Fashion Institute of Technology (a.k.a. the infamous F.I.T). And this “Jill of all Trades” doesn’t just do the blogging thing. Doré has lent her creative touch to a number of unconventional projects that include videos with Max Mara and David Yurman, a Jil Sander exhibition, a photographic diary of the Venice Biennale for Nowness and even a guest designer gig and exhibit with Gap. Working as both a photographer and illustrator has allowed her to collab with a long list of clients, too: Chloé, Louis Vuitton, Moschino, Max Mara, MAC Cosmetics, Dior and Club Monaco, just to name a few. As one of the industry’s most renowned female photogs, it’s no surprise that she’s been featured in everything like The New York Times, T Magazine, Vogue (American and British!), Interview and ELLE. And she’s not just another pretty face. Her business-savvy tenacity has scored her numerous nominations including Harper’s Bazaar Women of Fashion, GQ’s 25 Most Glamorous Women of Fashion, Vogue’s 40 Women of the Decade and Elle France’s 30 Most Powerful Women in Fashion. And we’re red with envy for her collection of rouge-coloured bags and shoes. Call it cliché, but Doré defines that easy Parisian chic style. But it’s far from the cookie cutter classic; she’s been known to cut-up and recreate luxury pieces to give them a new life. Case and point: That vintage fur vest. C’est tres chic, no?

One of my favorite pieces of jewelry during summer, made by my friend Aurélie Bidermann. The chic and relaxed mix is perfect.

Coat, Max Mara; Bag, Hermès

These completely broke my feet the first time I wore them, but I stuck it out and now they are so comfy. They’re the perfect winter boot and I love the metallic toe. People still stop me on the street to compliment them. What’s funny is I remember the day after this show, Carine wore them and everyone went crazy – and then I found them on sale two years later!

Black Sunglasses, Karen Walker; Beige Sunglasses, CHANEL

I found this fur at a thrift shop in the south of France. It was beautiful, but I prefer fur as less of a statement. So, last fashion week I chopped the sleeves off and now I wear it all the time as a layering piece.

Vest, Vintage; Bag, Fendi

I bought these shoes at the last minute before the Vogue Masquerade Ball – and I only wore them that once. I like that they’re a bit fetish-inspired, but they kill my feet!

This Stella McCartney vest is very representative of my style – the color, the fact that it feels classic but with a twist. I love that wearing it allows for so much creativity.

This was really one of the best moments of my life. I don’t know if Jean-Phillipe Delhomme really realized how touched and thrilled we were that he captured us – to me he is the best in the world. He was working for French Glamour, and I said on my blog that I’d love a print of his, and he came to a party and approached me. And now, Scott and I live in his old apartment.

Wallet, Prada

This perfecto totally sums up my style – my favorite color and fabric. The black leather version feels a little too literal for me.

Jacket, Isabel Marant; Bag, Valentino

Bags are like little sculptures! And of course I always have so much stuff that I could never go without one. It’s a necessity, but I try to have fun wearing them.

This jacket is actually the perfect example of an item that I love on the rack, but then barely wear! You never know with those things.

These shoes are so high! I love to wear them under wide, high-waisted pants and use them for fun color combinations. Illustration actually brought me to fashion – I started out as a children’s illustrator, but I realized that what I really loved was fashion. That’s why I started my blog – it was a place to share that work.

People always look confused when I wear these – they’re a real conversation starter. I love their purity and versatility – plus, they are super comfortable.

I remember totally falling in love with this coat at the Max Mara show and not being able to find it anywhere. By chance, the Max Mara team contacted me – I had to wait until they were done shooting it for the season. I remember telling myself that I had been shot way too many times in it! The Hermès bag is vintage and came from a vintage store called Les Trois Marches. I always knew I would buy myself a Kelly eventually – it was a classic and only a matter of time.

This photo was for a lovely New York Magazine feature about us. I was so sick with the flu the day they shot it – I didn’t think I could make it through the day. But as soon as it came out, I loved the photo. And – it’s our first real couple photo.
