Naomi Campbell… How do we begin to explain Naomi Campbell? Naomi Campbell is flawless. We hear her hair's insured for $10,000… we hear she does car commercials... in Japan.
Okay, you get the point. We just wanted to quote Mean Girls, okay? Regardless, it should come as no surprise that here at the Cov HQ, May 22 is NND: National Naomi Day. What, you don't have Campbell's birthday checked off on your calendar? In honour of (what should be) our national holiday, join us in a trip down memory lane catwalk, won't you?
Campbell's style and persona managed to practically define the '90s for us, while still remaining relevant today (see: that blonde Brazilian Vogue cover she busted out last month). She made serious headway for models of color, while never shying away from actually addressing their blatant exclusion within the industry. She's played muse to many of the most influential designers of our time, most memorably, the late Gianni Versace (P.S. if you haven't seen this yet, what are you doing with your time?) Yves Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen. And despite her legal troubles, she's mastered the whole silently commenting on her image without saying a word thing. As far as we're concerned, public relations students can quit school and simply study Campbell's career instead. How could we forget that 'Naomi Hit Me' tee or the times she wore a ball gown to community service?
From gracing the cover of virtually every magazine possible (a few hundred international Vogue covers? NBD!), to birthing some of our favorite GIF-able moments—happy birthday, Miss Campbell!
