Heather Marks

Model. New York

Rushing home to meet us from a whirlwind of fashion week fittings, Heather Marks is looking as fresh-faced as ever—but then again, she’s a model. We were graciously greeted at the door by Marks and her adorable pup Otis, whose signature slobbery tongue became a prime discussion topic. But Marks is used to it; Otis is a total spotlight stealer. Her apartment was glowing with scented candles and a killer playlist of Lana Del Rey on repeat. Before we invaded her closet, the Calgary native showed us her Canadian hospitality by offering us tea (her personal favourite) and plenty of snacks.
After getting the grand tour of her East Village home, we were eager to get inside her walk-in. We did feel a little sorry for her roommate and our pal, Matt, who happens to have a much smaller closet than Marks, whose own closet is packed with pieces she’s collected over the years. Many of Marks’s most treasured pieces have come from her time working as a model abroad—a Givenchy bag bought in Paris during Haute Couture and a leather jacket from All Saints in L.A. are merely a few amongst them. And Marks has got the ‘model off-duty’ outfit down to a science: Isabel Marant sneakers (or sometimes the Westwood buckle boots), Rag & Bone shearling coat, Alexander Wang bag, denim cut-offs and Ray-Bans.
Although she’s constantly travelling the world for work—modelling for Meisel, McDean and McGinley as well as fronting the campaigns of Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino and Nars—Marks has not forgotten her hometown stomping ground. She regularly returns to Calgary and spends her summers by the lake, driving around in her custom Harley Davidson truck. And Marks proudly reps her Canadian roots: wearing pieces from renowned Canadian labels such as Aritzia, Jeremy Laing frocks and Joe Fresh boots whenever she can. When it came time for Jake to shoot Marks’s portrait, he quickly realized he was working with a veteran. Even Otis got in on the action; taking cues from momma Marks, it clearly wasn’t his first time in front of the camera.

I love, love, love rose gold. These sneakers are so rad... if only I could work them into more outfits.

The pink tweed clutch is a very special bag to me. When I first started working with Karl and the team at CHANEL, they gave it to me as a gift.

On my 19th birthday, I had a 'ridiculous-themed' birthday party. Obviously I had to go all out with some serious chains. I’ve not been able to part with them yet. Part of me is sure I’ll have a need to wear them again one day.

I love to wear these in the summer with a pair of denim cut-offs. I feel that the lace oxfords add a little femininity to a casual outfit.

I originally went in to buy the classic CHANEL bag, then saw this and knew I had to have it. There was something so cool about it. It was somehow just a little more me. I like that it has more of an edge to it than the classics—a little more rock and roll.

The flask was a gift to me for my 19th birthday. Hoother has been a nickname my friends and family have called me for as long as I can remember. The blue ring is costume jewelry. I love finding fun pieces from thrift shops or junky jewelry shops. The rhino ring was another exciting find that I found on my backpacking trip to Thailand last year.

I got these studded boots while at home in Canada. I get asked all the time where I got them. I love to represent Canada! The bag is one of my favourites. I bring it everywhere I go.

These booties are one of my favourite possessions. I think they were my first 'big' purchase. I love them, and even though I haven’t worn them in years, I know they are an item I'll pull out in two years and wear everyday. The Rag & Bone jacket is amazing; it’s so warm and I love the massive hood.

Two of my favorites! Otis is just the best dog possible. He’s a purebred English bulldog and the runt of the litter. He has this wild, little personality and loves to be the centre of attention. Everybody who meets him falls in love with him. The bag was a find while shopping in Paris during Haute Couture. I was so excited when I came across it. I’m a bit of a Givenchy addict and I had never seen this colour combination before.

I love the soft, pastel tones of this Jeremy Laing dress. It’s great because I can totally glam it up or work it a bit more casually.
