Hillary Kerr

Editorial Director and Co-Founder, WhoWhatWear. Los Angeles

What goes better than a pair of Loeffler Randall flats paired with a vintage Chanel belt? Well, in Hillary Kerr's case, it's a master's degree in Journalism from NYU accessorized with a bachelor's degree from USC. Kerr, the editorial director and co-founder of Who What Wear (yesterday, we profiled her business partner Katherine Power) has one impeccable sense of style.... but also some serious brains to match. Prior to launching one of our favorite websites, Kerr was a Los Angeles-based freelance writer, scribing for publications such as Teen Vogue, ELLE, Maxim and Nylon. Insert little known fact here: Kerr co-wrote Anna Kournikova's fitness column for ELLE. Before making her move back to LA, Kerr spent some time in NYC, holding down the fort at ELLE's headquarters as the Associate Lifestyle Editor, where she covered food, travel, and design for the publication. Kerr epitomizes someone who has an innate knack for the high/low method of dressing. And as much as she loves a good vintage find or Alexa Chung's collection for Madewell, nothing comes between her and her first love...her Netflix subscription.

This picture is very Kerr-family oriented. My mother adores anything that has a vaguely Far East vibe, a tendency I definitely share, which is why I love a kimono sleeve so much. And isn't that peacock print just perfect? Props to its designer, the one and only Nicole Richie, that woman knows how to make a bed jacket! The yellow Bakelite and brass bracelet belonged to my grandmother. It has tiny seahorses and is just such a cheerful piece. (Also, I liberated that lamp from my parents' house a few years ago. They bought it in San Diego at Bo Danica in 1973; I love its chunky metal base.)

I don't think I've ever met a Chloé bag I didn't like. The gray one is one of my everyday bags (I've worn it more than any other bag in my closet), the brown one is just so awesome with that Lucite handle, and the black one with gray trim is the perfect work/NYFW bag because it's big enough to fit everything in the world. Seriously, it's like my magical Mary Poppins bag.

The gold ring looks like something from a Dr. Seuss drawing to me, or maybe a baby palm tree. I love how fat it is. The garnet ring was the first semi-fancy piece of jewelry I bought for myself. The store said it was from the '50s, but since then I've had jewelers tell me they think it's from the early '40s. Regardless, I just love its princess shape and the color.

The second I spotted this dress on Net-A-Porter, I knew I had to have it. The gorgeous print just killed me, plus the slightly swirly skirt is just what I look for in a cocktail dress. As for the boots, well, let's just say that I don't own flat shoes—period—but these boots were too perfect to pass up. They're my go-to shoes most weekends and I always wear them when traveling. (In fact, I build travel outfits around them; they're that important to me.) The necklace is also a staple for me. A friend of mine picked it up in Hong Kong a few years ago and I've found myself throwing it on with so many things over the years. It's kind of hard to place—it's a little Chinese, sort of African, and has a hint of the Southwest thrown in too—which is what makes it so versatile.

Every time I look at this dress, I just wish it could speak and tell me about all the glamorous parties it has attended. I found it at Shareen Vintage in New York a couple of years ago and bought it immediately. It's so comfortable and the rhinestone-encrusted skirt is just sassy. It's shown with a fabulous necklace Katherine got me when visiting Kanas with one of her besties. The CHANEL belt is probably one of the pieces I wear the most—I love a waist belt!

Elephants and hippos are just the cutest, aren't they? I love them as decor (I found the jade elephant at a bazaar in Hawaii) or as a quirky piece of jewelry.

Susan Miller of AstrologyZone.com is my guru. She's seriously the bee's knees and her forecasting is simply impeccable. Our lovely Art Director, Sarah Lee, knows that I'm crazy about Susan, so she gave me this magazine—ANPQuarterly, it's published by RVCA—which now sits on my kitchen table at all times.

I met Katie through Katherine (they've been pals for ages) and I adore her line Simone. She makes perfect little jackets, including this military-meets-CHANEL iteration that I wear with everything from jeans to pencil skirts.

I have a gigantic face/head, so I definitely appreciate an oversized frame. I'm also clearly going through a tortoiseshell thing right now…no, that's not true, I always love tortoiseshell, especially on blondes.

I've adored Alexa Chung's personal style for years, so naturally I needed to pick up one of the pieces from her Madewell collection. As for the jewelry, I tend to pick oversized pieces or brightly colored things, and I have a serious weakness for anything turquoise (the color and the stone).

One of our former interns, Amanda Thomas, designed this ring for her line, Luv AJ. I wear it constantly. Every time I put it on, someone asks me about it, and then I get to tell that person about the lovely Ms. Thomas and her exceptional jewelry line. She's so talented and the price point is amazingly affordable—everyone needs to know about Luv AJ!

The two jackets on the left I found at a military surplus store in San Diego, the one on the right I got at a military memorabilia store outside of Palm Springs. My father was in the Navy for many, many years, so I'm always drawn to things with a military vibe.

Sometimes you fall in love with a dress, even though you have nowhere to wear it and no reason to buy it. That's the story with this floor-length dress. Hopefully I'll have a chance to take it out for a spin at some point in the near future!

The green dress made me swoon the second I laid eyes on it. It's probably my favorite dress in the world. I'm obsessed with all things green and the fact the print was hand-painted? Amazing. Even better: it fit perfectly—that doesn't happen for me with vintage pieces very often. Not to get too romantic on you, but it's like we were made for each other! The gold dress is just a great cocktail frock. I add a little belt, some super high heels, and a gimlet and I'm good to go! Both dresses are very emblematic of my personal style which is pretty feminine and definitely focused on the late '50s/early '60s. Needless to say, I'm kind of a huge Mad Men fan, to put it mildly, and I like to ask myself, 'What would Joan Holloway wear?' whenever I'm getting dressed.

Like most women, I adore a little leather jacket to distraction and am always looking for a new iteration. So when I spotted this yummy shearling version at Topshop, I literally gasped. I'm crazy about the over-sized collar and the buckles at the waist and wrists, two details that just make the jacket marvelous, in my humble opinion. It has such a jaunty air; it makes me feel a little like a modern-day Amelia Earhart when I wear it. The shoes, might I add, were a birthday gift from my wonderful business partner. Katherine always gives the most insanely perfect gifts, like these heavenly charcoal suede heels.

When I lived in New York, the colors in my wardrobe could be summed up in one word: black. But after I returned to California, I started embracing just about every shade under the sun. Give me cherry red, electric violet, hot coral, chartreuse, Yves Klein blue—anything vibrant, that's me.
