Jerome Rousseau

Shoe Designer. Los Angeles

Shoe guru (and fellow Canadian) Jerome C. Rousseau opened the doors to his L.A. home to us—only one day after a break-in—donning an all-white ensemble that few could pull off. After being introduced to his pet bird and perusing his elegant designs we immediately got down to business.
When it comes to his eccentric-dandy style, Jerome is a creature of habit. We noticed a lot of all trompe-l'oeil everything, and stacks on stacks of stripy sailor shirts. Also among his essentials? Crisp white trousers and color-blocked bowling shoes. His love of neon lights shone brightly, with several pieces on display—as did his love of Ms. Cyndi Lauper—his self-proclaimed "first crush."

The Jerome C. Rousseau label is now in its third year, and it has been a rewarding journey so far. I've been fortunate to have the support of great retailers, publications, and celebrities since the launch. It's hard work to launch a label, but I have a never-ending passion for this field of work.

These are my "Trompe l'Oeil" lace-up trainers. I fell in love with this style in Tokyo and bought my first white pair when I was there. Later, I bought three more pairs in white, navy, pink, and gray. Needless to say, it's a favorite shoe of mine.

Cyndi Lauper is fierce! I got this pair of cheetah-print shoes in Amsterdam a long time ago and wrote Cyndi on one toe and Lauper on the other. She's a true eccentric and was definitely my first crush.

Moccasins, Ken Diamond; Booties, Ladyboy; Leather Bag, Vintage

These are my Millennium suspenders! I wish I could be honest in saying I wore these on the 31st of December 1999, but unfortunately I didn't. I probably am not cool enough to get away with wearing these, but that doesn't stop me.

I love this gold watch. I bought it over 15 years ago in London and have worn it almost every day since. I don't remember having to change the battery ever, so I once joked that it continues to work because it loves me back.

The thing with printed shirts is that if they make me smile, I want to own them. I rarely wear them, but they're pieces I like to have in my wardrobe. Maybe a secret little collection is going on here, but I don't want to admit it.

This is a vintage shirt with a spectacular print! The lace-up trainers are by Dr X for Levi's, and they're made using vintage denim that creates a subtle contrast.

This teddy was a present from a friend, and the multicolor zip-pull necklace was designed by a previous assistant of mine. I made one in blue and yellow to gift to a favorite Swedish musician, but it looked so good, I decided to keep it.

I have a ton of stripy shirts! It seems like I wear sailor shirts every day. There are just so many variations, and I seem to find that there's a stripe for every occasion.

I really love bowling shoes. It creates an interesting symmetry as a pair with the contrasting color. I'm particularly fond of this studded pair.

Jacket, Moschino

This jacket is precious. It's a present from a friend in London, and I suspect it's very old. The lining is stunning and beautifully detailed. You can tell this piece has lived when you look at the details closely. I wear it to go out dancing or to go to fun gigs.
