Joanna Hillman Part II

Style Director, Harper's Bazaar. New York

There are some homes and closets (actually, more than some) that we leave feeling like we just scratched the surface. We mean, guys: there’s only so much time, and way, way to many racks of Saint Laurent, Céline and Christopher Kane to get through. It was that lingering feeling after Coveteur-ing Joanna Hillman back in the day, plus the fact that, in the time since we’d visited her last, things have seriously been happening for the editor—her promotion to Style Director at Harper’s Bazaar, her dreamy NYC wedding (in which she wore archival Rochas as arranged for her by her boss and fashion fairy godmother, Glenda Bailey—be jealous)—that lead to what seemed like the inevitable return .

Suffice it to say the curiosity factor around the state of Hillman’s closet since our viewing in 2011 was high when we arrived at her Tribeca apartment. The editor, wearing an Altuzarra striped blouse, perfectly ripped jeans (she’s somehow able to make even destroyed denim look refined) and a pair of Alexander Wang sandals, along with her signature red lip (more on that #comingsoontoaCoveteurnearyou), welcomed us in once again, having already removed her many Pierre Hardy, Ferragamo and Smythson bags from their dusters in anticipation of our digging. In fact, Hillman had pre-arranged her closet for our viewing (and Jake’s photographing) pleasure, displaying favorite silk Dries Van Noten and Céline blouses prominently—maybe her knack of showing off clothes kind of comes with the whole sittings editor territory? We guess this is what happens when someone knows what to expect from us. What can we say? We were pretty much in Coveteur heaven.

We have to admit though: any further exploration into the depths of Hillman’s closet (and her second closet. And her third, uh, secret room-converted-into-a-closet) and through her many impeccably organized shoeboxes and jewelry trays, was an all-around team effort. We mean, we’ll take any chance we can get for some styling advice courtesy of the woman responsible for Bazaar’s crazy-beautiful September subscriber cover shoot with Audrey Hepburn’s granddaughter (issue on newsstands now—run, don't walk). Then again, you can’t really go wrong when options range from Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler blazers to Birkenstock slides courtesy of Zara, Givenchy and everyone else in between. (No kidding: Hillman might have had the most impressive collection of the sandal of season we’ve seen yet, including the ultra hard to come by Sacai platforms.) We’ll give her a few years, but we’re not going to lie: we left Hillman’s thinking that a Part III could be a distinct possibility.
