Hair and Make-Up Artist. Los Angeles
There’s no better way to spend a Saturday morning than with celebrity hair stylist and makeup artist, Joey Maalouf. (Yes, we’re talking about Rachel Zoe’s BFF and co-star on The Rachel Zoe Project.) We popped by his fresh new pad in Beverly Hills (he recently made the big move from N.Y.C.) and to our surprise, were showered with a full home-cooked breakfast of blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes… mimosas, included! It may have been 10 a.m., but hey, who can turn down a good mimosa? Maalouf went all out: fresh-cut sunflowers (his favourite!), berries, syrup—the works! Post-food, we got right down to business. We were enamored with the sheer meticulousness of Maalouf’s closet; each hanger was perfectly spaced and his shoes perfectly aligned. His L.A. home is filled with colour and texture—pillows gifted by interior designer Betsey Burnham, brightly bound books from BOOKMARC on Melrose and a ton of great finds from This is Not Ikea. We even dressed up his “pet” giraffe—a random purchase that he confessed was bought because it hilariously reminded him of an ex. His bubbly personality and quirky sense of humour kept us entertained all morning. When we asked about online shopping, Maalouf responded: “I like the process of trying things on. I also love a friend’s opinion. ‘You wouldn’t buy a new mini skirt without asking your friends first.’” Any man who quotes Mean Girls is a winner in our books. He even gave us each a mini beauty consultation and spilled some expert secrets, like keeping eye cream in the freezer to help de-puff in the a.m. [Ed note: we tried and tested; it really works!] Maalouf’s style is effortlessly cool and his collection of vintage tees —“The more holes the better,” he said—is one of the best we’ve seen in a while. But the real pièce de résistance was his beauty closet—a true Coveteur first. “Nothing makes me happier then opening my ‘Glam Closet.’ I never have less then 10 bottles of Elnett in my house at all times.”

My NYC apartment was so minimal, so when I decided to move to LA I wanted to do the opposite with more color and texture. These pillowcases were gifted to me by one of my favorite LA-based interior designers, Betsey Burnham. I was so excited when I saw them. I love peacocks and lions and they make my bed look so happy. The limited-edition Nikes are called Chocolate Covered Bananas. They're so major!

I took these matches from Byron Williams Salon. He is truly a master hair-cutter and one of my dearest friends. I can’t live without his haircuts. I am a die-hard fan of Rodin face and body oil—two products I can’t breathe without. I dip myself in it every morning. I love the way it smells and my skin looks and feels polished all day. Beauty secret: I keep my eye cream in the freezer, it helps de-puff.

When I received my first huge cheque—well, at least I thought it was huge at the time—I cashed it in and went on a shopping spree on Madison Avenue. This turtleneck was the first purchase I made. Every time I see it in my closet it reminds me of a happy moment in NYC, and makes me miss the days of living on the Upper East Side. I've only worn it once and it was to leave my hotel room in Milan and walk over to Rachel Zoe's connecting hotel room to do her hair and makeup, then I changed to go out.

What’s better than torn-up vintage T-shirts? I buy them based on how soft and worn-in they are; the more holes, the better. My dear friend Heather Speranza at What Goes Around Comes Around (which is one of my favourite stores in LA) always has the best T-shirts.

This poster and I have everything in common. I spend a lot of time on my computer writing, and updating my social media as often as possible. I’ve had the A.P.C. cap for years, I'm obsessed with it.

These red-and-black high-tops were the first pair I fell in love with. I actually stole them from my friend Anthony Francis’s closet. I just had to have them and wouldn’t take no for an answer; he’s such a good friend. I love to read and I tend to work three books at a time. It helps my brain process stories better when I multitask. I usually save magazines to entertain myself while flying. My favourite is Psychology Today; I am glued to every issue and read it cover to cover. The only magazines I keep in my house have stories or photos that I have worked on.

I’ve had these sunglasses forever! I wore them a lot when I lived in NYC but now I find it hard to wear white sunglasses since the LA weather keeps me tanned. Shopping for Home in LA is amazing! I love This is Not Ikea, Blue Print, and Rugs and Art. Rachel and Rodger moving me to the West Coast was a great decision, I'm happy and feel extremely at home here.

This sweatshirt was a gag gift to my friend Anthony Francis, and he ended up buying me the same one…twinsies! So we decided to wear matching looks and go dancing. I wore it with dark denim shorts and neon Nikes, not the richest of looks but definitely the most fun.

I love these leather and mesh shoes! I’ve been wearing them like sneakers lately. I do most of my shopping in stores like Marc Jacobs, All Saints or Barneys. I haven’t really gotten into online shopping yet. I like the process of trying things on. I also love getting a friend's opinion. You wouldn’t buy a new mini skirt without asking your friends first.

James Dean was beautiful. His face is art. I found this shirt in my parents' basement when I was 16; my brother, Elie, bought it on his first trip to California in 1990. I’ve worn it so much that I have 10 years’ worth of pictures wearing it. There is nothing punk rock about me, but that won’t stop me from going to a Misfits concert; I like to party outside the box.

I got this comic book poster at a vintage store in West Hollywood. I thought she was a bit dramatic and funny. She’s rambling on about a bad day.

Sometimes, when I shop with my outlandish and fabulous friend Joyce Bonelli, happy accidents happen, like this metallic Comme des Garçons wallet. It was a #TellMeEverything date that ended up at Maxfields. She was so adamant that I have it, that she bought it for me. I love it, the color is so fun! I love when my friends inspire me to try something new. Collecting coffee table books is an obsession that I think most people should have. Sometimes I buy them because I love the color or shape, and sometimes I just love the title. I am obsessed with a hot pink cover! I get a lot of my books at BOOKMARC on Melrose Place. They have an amazing selection of art, music, fashion and vintage books.

I haven’t had a chance to wear these boots yet. I'm not sure how I want to wear them. I love the color; maybe they’re good weekend brunch shoes. Speaking of brunch, I loved having The Coveteur over. I'm obsessed with making pancakes. I usually mix a few different batches—for The Cov I made chocolate chip and blueberry.
