Kate Davidson Hudson

Accessories Editor. New York

Ever since we were able to read (actually – ever since we were able to look at pictures and appreciate pretty things), ELLE Magazine has been a staple on our bedside tables. In fact, Stephanie Mark, The Coveteur’s co-founder took her fashion Bible dreams to the next level and spent sometime interning under the mentorship of Ms. Kate Lanphear, ELLE’s Style Director. It’s funny how things come full circle. And now, we ventured inside the Manhattan home of the one and only Kate Davidson Hudson, ELLE’s Accessories Director. She’s responsible for filling the glossy’s pages with killer necklaces, sky-high wedges, chandelier earrings, and of course, the drool worthy handbags (yes we are looking at YOU two-toned Céline shopper). As the queen of organization and compartmentalization (her closet could even give The Container Store a run for their money), she loves to mix fine gems with costume jewelry to add a unique level of personalization. We share a mutual love of stacked rings, vintage Lanvin, anything in pony hair by Pierre Hardy, and H.Stern chain-link bracelets.
Her home is filled with antique books dating back to the 18th Century, some of which belonged to her husband’s grandfather – an avid collection of first edition literary publications. And that’s not the only piece of history she has sitting in her chic home – she’s also one of the lucky owners of a limited edition yellow-gold Van Cleef Cadeñas watch, originally made for the Duchess of Windsor in 1935. When it was announced the House of Van Cleef was stopping production on this minimalistic timepiece, KDH made sure she got her hands on one. Nice work Kate – we are officially jealous.

I love an oversized statement ring. Rings work well with my more minimalist mantra of referring to only one or two statement pieces at any one time. These are some of my more "baubly" options that are actually huge in scale. The detail in the two unsigned vintage pieces is incredible, and they are in pristine condition. So they’re particularly special finds.

This shopper was a must-have. I love the rich earth tones and the mix of leather and canvas. It’s exactly what I’m in the mood to carry for spring; and, it’s large enough to justify it as a practical addition to my day-to-day wardrobe.

I love this dress. The way it drapes and folds seamlessly when you put it on is incredible; it’s the epitome of timeless elegance. I bought it in Paris last season and it’s so comfortable, I would wear it multiple times a week if I could.

When I moved into my new apartment, closet (particularly accessories) space was of key importance. I dedicated a section of the wardrobe in my dressing area to jewelry and smaller accessories so I can open a drawer and see everything. I’m usually dressing in a hurry, so I like everything laid out in clear view so I can see all of the options, grab, and go!

I’m also obsessed with vintage costume and fine jewelry and have boxes upon boxes of pieces I’ve collected and hunted down over the years. At the moment, I’m really into vintage Van Cleef, late '60s/early '70s compressed César pieces, and early '70s signed Lanvin pieces.

This costume piece looks really glam on. I usually get more comments when I wear this piece, than pieces three times as valuable. It’s a testament to the value of well-done costume jewelry.

This is an unsigned Modernist Dutch pendant from the early '70s. I love the scale and graphic motif. The story behind the boy and girl figures depicted on the front of the pendant, however, remains a mystery. I like to think it’s depicting a love story.

I think Eddie is one of the most innovative and inspiring costume designers out there today. I cannot get, or shoot, enough of his pieces. And, to top it off, he is one of the nicest, hardest-working young designers out there… as if anyone needs more reason to love him!

This watch is one of my most coveted pieces. It is the Van Cleef Cadeñas, which was a watch originally designed for the Duchess of Windsor in 1935. In a time when it was not considered polite for women to wear watches, the House designed the Cadeñas so that it read like a bracelet, but only the wearer could see the small watch dial hidden within the clasp. I love it in plain yellow gold on a gold snakechain, it has a certain timeless elegance about it that is imbued with an incredible history. Van Cleef recently announced they are stopping production on this piece, so I felt compelled to get one of my own before they were all gone.

This is one of the chicest chain-link bracelets. It’s chunky enough to make a statement, but still has a sense of refinement and polish that betrays the elegant H.Stern sensibility. It’s the perfect everyday chain.

I’m more of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry. I usually stick to one or two statement pieces. I love to mix my fine jewelry with costume. I think when you're young, it feels fresh to mix costume pieces with your fine pieces. I always feel a little stuffy when I’m wearing too many real jewels, so it’s nice to break it up and personalize your look with costume.
