Keegan Singh

Fashion Stylist. New York

We may be aficiandos of color and patterns, but our foundation has always been black and white. Today's subject, stylist Keegan Singh, who has worked with everyone from V Magazine to styling Coco Rocha, knows what works for his wardrobe...and he runs with it. While the base may be tones of black and white, the textures are widespread. From vintage tattered off-white rock tees to heavy leather motorcycle pants, this is a guy who often let's his bold stark hair take the spotlight.
When we played voyeurs to his NYC pad, it was filled with signed note cards from top notch editors, Sharpie signed coffee table books and more shoes and tees in every variation of our favourite tones. But every now and then, just like his styling choices, Singh manages to throw us for a loop hole. We peered a plethora of bold striped St. James looking nautical long sleeves, and for his portrait, he threw on a leopard printed dress shirt, with his messy hair once again, taking the spotlight. While black and white may be his stylistic insignia, we love it when Mr. Singh adds a little animal skin into his daily style choices.

Kate and Laura are so awesome! I really wanted one of these knits. I talk to them quite a bit and we just did this rad project together for SHOWstudio: a retrospective of all their collections up until FW11. I'm so excited for it to come out! I think I asked for 80 percent black and 20 percent white and they did it. I love them! They are the most interesting people to talk to and to have a creative conversation with. I love to talk to them, they inspire me so much.

Sweater, Custom Rodarte; Bracelet, Tom Binns

I am a Stubbs and Wootton junkie. I love a slip-on in the summer because it's easy and chic and you can take your shoes off in a second and jump in the pool or get on set and not get the backdrop dirty. Tonne is so special and one of my favourite friends. I was doing a sitting for US Vogue and she was shooting after me and she called me a pro—I almost had a heart attack! She is one of the most wonderful people I have met in this business, so supportive and loving and an amazing editor. I wear a lot of Eddie Borgo and Tom Binns. I help Eddie with the brand so of course, I love what he does. He is super talented. So is my good friend Tom Binns. He is the one who got me really into accessories and I think he is beyond brilliant.

My vintage loafers are something I have just because I love to wear them. Jimmy at Trash and Vaudeville always makes fun of me because I wear them without socks in the middle of the winter. My books are very special to me. I use them all the time as references, plus I love going to book signings and meeting my heroes. I just got two new ones to add to the collection Philip-Lorca diCorcia, one of my favourite photographers. To have him sign my books is so cool!

I have been wearing striped shirts forever since I watched City of Lost Children when it first came out. They work for me. They're great for work because you can just throw them on and go.

I really have a thing about shoes. I love everything from skater shoes to tuxedo shoes. It’s all about what you’re wearing them with. I took out the laces in the white shoes and put in a Lanvin ribbon from a pair of Lanvin shoes. The other more beat-up ones are from an amazing tango store I went to in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

My mood board has things that I love and continue to inspire me. I have a load of things I want to add but there's no space left—I need another one. This belt has been sitting in my closet while I try to figure out how to pull it off. It’s more of a thing I just love. It might show up in a editorial before it's on me.

My really good friend, Jimmy Garillo, made the fetish shoe tank. It’s my new prized possession. I bought the vintage yellow skeleton shirt for my 25th birthday party at Search and Destroy on St. Marks.

Wearing the blazer over my shoulder is just something I instinctually do. That Mick picture is super special because my sister gave it to me. She got it from an old friend of hers in Santa Barbara. I don’t think they make posters that big anymore, I think this one's from the '70s. I love it so much.

Me magazine was a fun project because I got to shoot all the friends who inspire Eddie and me. It’s always fun to shoot your friends. Lynn is a good friend and an amazing writer. She always has another way of looking at things which I love. Eddie’s jewels are great, wait till you see the new ad we just did. The skateboard, which I love so much, was given to me by Chad Muska. I need to get him to sign it!

Tim Hamilton makes all these great striped shirts, I think I have most of them. This is a good vintage Sioux Sioux shirt, but I'm not sure where I got it. I collect skulls and this Día de los Muertos paper mache one is special.
