To quote ourselves: “Some of the best things in the fashion world come in pairs.” Case and point: Kemal Harris and Karla Welch – the bi-costal styling duo behind Zooey Deschanel, Hailee Steinfeld, Amy Poehler, Olivia Wilde and, yes, Justin Bieber.
“We are always on the same page creatively and we’re firm believers that two brains are better than one,” she told us.
The Canadian-born and bred duo met during Fashion Week and what started as somewhat of a referral for fellow Canadian singer, Feist, turned into a match made in The Wall Group heaven. From singing back-up with Welch for Feist SNL’s performance (“It was definitely the scariest and most fun moment of my life!”) to all the major awards shows (The Grammys, Golden Globes, Billboard Awards, etc.) to like every talk show ever (Letterman, SNL, Fallon, American Idol, you name it!), the duo have checked it all off their list. Yet amidst the chaos of getting their girls and guys red carpet ready, Harris manages to moonlight as the bassist in Matte Black, a rock/psych band.
And though you can take the girl out of rock and roll to do her 9-to-5, you can’t take the rock and roll out of the girl. Her wardrobe is filled with angsty band T-shirts (shout out to her mom for digging up dozens of old concert T’s) and her Brooklyn abode is adorned in guitar and basses on the walls, record players and lots of leather. Besides, any girl who’s the President of a “tequila drinking club” – they even have jackets with mandatory patches – easily wins our vote. We were welcomed with that very same West Coast/Great White North graciousness that Welch greeted us with: a fancy spread of cheeses, chocolates and charcuterie from the local market and we dug – hands first – into it before discovering her closet.
Amongst some of her newest purchases (cue: Saint Laurent sweaters and shoes we were tempted to walk out with), were as assortment of archive CHANEL treasures. Ah, the perks of being a former employee! And times like these call for busting out the big guns: The “2005.” Never heard of it? Yeah, it’s just that rare… and she’s just that badass.
