Leslie Fremar

Stylist. New York

“I really loved being Anna's assistant, and I honestly believe that if I didn't work for her I wouldn't be as successful or hard working as I am. I think it really changed my character,” celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar told us. “I'm sure all of you have seen The Devil Wears Prada, and yes, it is a movie and yes, a lot of it is exaggerated—but some of that stuff actually did happen, and every day was an adventure.”

We have a ton of respect for the Canadian-born and bred stylist; let’s be honest, not everyone survives the cold winter Wintour. Though she’s put her years of Vogue behind her, Fremar keeps close reminders of her days alongside Anna with thoughtful reminders framed on her walls. We caught up with her just a week or so before the Oscars and a just weeks post-giving birth to her newest little bundle of joy. While little Leo slept, we peered through Fremar’s closet with all eyes on the Dries. (Side note: Once upon a time Jake thought it was pronounced “Dreyes.” Knew you would enjoy that one!)

After giving us a tour of her space, – wait ‘til you see her immaculate bookshelf, which she had professionally propped – Fremar went into her archives and pulled out the big guns: original red carpet sketches. Like we always say, sometimes we tend to forget the talented magicians working behind-the-seams to create the sartorial showstoppers that catapult celebrities to the Best Dressed List. Fremar is the girl responsible for dressing the likes of Charlize Theron (you saw the Oscar story we did with her, right?), Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and more. One by one, Fremar laid out original sketches by Alber Elbaz, Jason Wu, Christian Lacroix and so fourth showing us how each of the leading ladies’ look came to be.

“People don't realize how much work goes into creating an Oscar look or award show look. There is something really satisfying when seeing the final product,” she told us.

Before we bounced we reminisced about our shared Canadian roots and quickly realized our hometown similarities. Turns out we went to the the same high school and summer camp. Small world, right?
