Leslie Fremar

Stylist. New York

“I really loved being Anna's assistant, and I honestly believe that if I didn't work for her I wouldn't be as successful or hard working as I am. I think it really changed my character,” celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar told us. “I'm sure all of you have seen The Devil Wears Prada, and yes, it is a movie and yes, a lot of it is exaggerated—but some of that stuff actually did happen, and every day was an adventure.”

We have a ton of respect for the Canadian-born and bred stylist; let’s be honest, not everyone survives the cold winter Wintour. Though she’s put her years of Vogue behind her, Fremar keeps close reminders of her days alongside Anna with thoughtful reminders framed on her walls. We caught up with her just a week or so before the Oscars and a just weeks post-giving birth to her newest little bundle of joy. While little Leo slept, we peered through Fremar’s closet with all eyes on the Dries. (Side note: Once upon a time Jake thought it was pronounced “Dreyes.” Knew you would enjoy that one!)

After giving us a tour of her space, – wait ‘til you see her immaculate bookshelf, which she had professionally propped – Fremar went into her archives and pulled out the big guns: original red carpet sketches. Like we always say, sometimes we tend to forget the talented magicians working behind-the-seams to create the sartorial showstoppers that catapult celebrities to the Best Dressed List. Fremar is the girl responsible for dressing the likes of Charlize Theron (you saw the Oscar story we did with her, right?), Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and more. One by one, Fremar laid out original sketches by Alber Elbaz, Jason Wu, Christian Lacroix and so fourth showing us how each of the leading ladies’ look came to be.

“People don't realize how much work goes into creating an Oscar look or award show look. There is something really satisfying when seeing the final product,” she told us.

Before we bounced we reminisced about our shared Canadian roots and quickly realized our hometown similarities. Turns out we went to the the same high school and summer camp. Small world, right?

I worked at American Vogue, and we started shooting celebs on the cover, and I really enjoyed the process of collaborating with the talent instead of working with the model; you have more control over the image. I realized that I wanted to work with actresses and I got a job as the director of VIP at Prada, and worked there for a year before I went out on my own. My very first client was Salma Hayek, and she was on the jury panel at Cannes. She needed more outfits than I had ever seen before, and it was very stressful. I knew once I got through that job I would be able to do anything.

I styled the cover of Stars in Dior. It's amazing, Charlize is the perfect client because she wears clothes so well, and she enjoys it—and you can't ask for anything better than that. I think we compliment each other really well: she has more California sensibility, and I bring a bit of a N.Y. edge, and together we are able to come up with something relatable and interesting.

I just bought a Julie Blackmon print; she's a really talented photographer. I also just bought a Harry Benson photo.  In terms of young upcoming photographers I really like what Sebastian Kim is doing.

I have a long-standing relationship with Dior through Charlize, and they are always a pleasure to work with.  I appreciate that they include me in a lot of the decision-making and it’s a great collaboration when we make custom pieces for Charlize.

My very first internship was at Flare Magazine in the art department, where I would scan images and put them in their files for the layouts. The fashion director at the time needed help on a photoshoot, and took me from the photo department. I had such a great time that I knew I wanted to work in styling. It seemed so glamorous at the time and it felt unreachable. Canada is definitely a lot slower paced and quieter; I miss summers at the cottage, my friends, my family, but other than that I really do love New York.

I always get really excited to see my clients on the red carpet.  People don't realize how much work goes into creating an Oscar look or award show look.  There is something really satisfying when seeing the final product, when you see the actual final look on the red carpet. I get so excited for the girls, it's almost as if sending them off to something special, like their wedding.

Styling is a long process, and it starts about a month before [a show]. It's about collecting sketches and going through them, and showing them to your client, and then making decisions, choosing fabrics, and then the fitting process starts.  So I would say the whole thing takes about a month, and I think the most important part of it is trusting your instincts and believing in your choices.
