How do we love Lena? Let us count the ways… again. We’ve already waxed poetic about her once. Her wholehearted embracing of pajama dressing. Her character’s “voice of a generation” proclamation that turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Her championing of polka dots, florals, lip prints, eye prints—pretty much prints in general—no matter the occasion. Her loveable, relatable philosophizing on everything from tabloid magazines to sneaker wedges. Her shorteralls. Her brazen bralessness. Her cool-kids-only,Girls-esque entourage. We could go on.
So it comes as no shocker that the latest to catch the Dunham bug is Ms. Anna Wintour herself. Now there’s an unlikely power duo if there ever was one: the reigning queen of fashion’s elite paired with the girl who rocks rubber lizards and a bra on her head. When their twin bobs popped up side-by-side at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund event in late October, interests were piqued and rumors were sparked—is there a Vogue cover in the works? And if so, what will she wear?!
Her recent picks have us leaning towards the ladylike—like the camel leather Reed Krakoff she donned for the CFDA event— but with a Lena twist, like the voluminous floor-length turquoise floral Prada that elicited mixed reactions at The Emmy’s (including Dunham’s sister, who noted “It’s like the Delia’s catalogue made a red carpet dress!”).
But the girl has never shied away from a little exposure—whether it’s plunging necklines, backless sheaths or naked tattoos, Dunham is as fearless in her fashion choices as she is with her on screen personae (visions of a mesh-topped, coked-out Hannah Horvath dance in our heads). So maybe Vogue will meet her halfway—a little Erdem, per chance, echoing her custom Met Ball gown? Thakoon? Vena Cava? Pamela Love accessories?
Well, if Dunham has any say in it, we’re guessing her BFF Rachel Antonoff has made the shortlist. Or, you know, they could always embrace her in full naturalist glory… everyone loves a little nude shoot every once in awhile, right?
