Lori Levine

Lori Levine

Founder, Flying Television. New York

Remember how you felt the first time you watched Clueless and saw Cher Horowitz’s rotating closet? Now imagine how we felt when we saw it (okay, something very similar!) in the flesh.

When we popped by Lori Levine’s pad in Union Square, we could never have predicted the surprises we would encounter. On the outside, Levine’s home boasts a traditional N.Y.C. walk-up with a picturesque stoop, but on the inside it’s a whole other story. Upon entering her museum-like living space, we were greeted with works of art by everyone from Banksy to KAWS to Shepard Fairey and Jeff Koons.

After browsing the wall of fame, Levine took us up her spiral staircase to her newly-renovated closet—although we think “shoe-seum” is more apt of a descriptor. With a little help from her friend Kim Gieske (and the hunky guys on that new show, BUILT), Levine’s place got a total overhaul complete with a custom-built shoe carousel and racks outfitted with hydraulic lifts. (Way to one up Cher!) And with a shoe collection like this, it’s only fitting that each pair is highlighted front-and-centre to be seen.

When it comes to collecting, art may take a close second to Levine’s CHANEL. She practically prays at the alter of Uncle Karl daily. No, seriously, though; she had street artist, Skullphone, make her a limited-edition CHANEL cross installation. “He said, ‘I will make you a deal. I will make one, and only one, for you.' It took him six months, because it is such a painstaking process. It had to be driven across country, and is painted with this resin that can’t be touched by the human hand.”

But her dedication to CHANEL doesn’t end there: Levine’s collection of bags was some of the rarest we’ve ever seen. In fact, she even acquired that mini work of art we first saw up close-and-personal at the Paris-Bombay Metiers D’Art show.

The most artful, awe-inspiring piece in her whole collection, though? A one-of-a-kind orange Hermès Birkin, which artist Nicolas Forker doodled on with a Sharpie. Now that is one for a museum.

If my bags could talk they would say “stop playing favorites!” I tend to grab a bag and use it every day for months and months. Then it goes back into rotation only for me to rediscover it a year later.

I get asked about my shoes often by celebrities I work with on events. They are always thinking about looks for the red carpet and events. Kate Upton and I were in Las Vegas recently when we both realized we had brought the same Valentino sequin nail head sling-backs. Kelly Osbourne and I were just gushing over how Dita Von Teese gets every pair of Louboutin’s off the line because she is such close friends with Christian.

My friend Kim Gieske is an interior designer and she came over and basically told me I needed a remodel. This room was schizophrenic. Imagine the island of lost toys! It housed my clothes, bags, a printer, extra hair products, and a ton o’ luggage. I told her I wanted to be able to see everything at a glance and to make use of every square inch, including building up to the 16-foot ceiling. That is when we brought in StorageMotion. They custom built the shoe carousel and the racks are all on hydraulic lifts. I have to admit it’s a bit “Overboard” (as in the movie and well the actual definition of that word I guess!).

I love anything really different like this metal CHANEL purse, its chainmail but it looks like a Hershey’s Kiss, and the clutch on the right that looks like a book from an old library.

I grew up very middle-class, in a very high-class community. It makes you value every penny you earn and every penny you spend when you are one of the “have-nots”. I never thought I would own even one CHANEL bag! But when I opened Flying Television I made a deal with myself that if it lasted a year then I would buy myself one. I bought the classic Black Leather 255 with silver hardware. Well almost 14 years later you can see that my first baby has some siblings! With CHANEL clothes, bags, and accessories I look for classic or extremely unique. I want pieces I will wear now and when I am 80. Deep down I am still that middle class girl from Long Island, so if I am going to spend money on something I have to know it will last for decades.

There is one they would have to pry out of my cold dead hands: my orange Hermès Birkin, for very sentimental reasons. It was a gift from a very generous client, but that bright orange gave me pause, and it sat for two years in the box. One day my friend, Nicholas Forker, a very talented fine artist found the box and said why don’t you ever use this? I handed him a Black Sharpie and said, “you know what I like, use this bag as a canvas and go nuts.” He took it for a week and came back with what is now a totally unique, amazing, and one-of-a-kind work of art.

The street artist Skullphone was having a gallery show here in NYC and he had made a Prada cross, which I loved. But as you know I’m a CHANEL girl. Later that year, we were both invited to the same dinner at Art Basel and I asked him if he had ever thought of making a CHANEL version. He said “I will make you a deal, I will make ONE, and only one, for you.” It took him six months because it is such a painstaking process. Wear SPF every day –even in the winter! I only use product with 15 – 30 SPF and I am very careful about protecting my skin from the sun. I inherited very good skin so I keep it pretty simple day to day: Kiehl’s moisturizer with SPF 15, Sonya Dakar face wash, and I use the Clarisonic about once a month. Michael Marcus makes the best pressed powder I have ever used. It is the make-up equivalent of Photoshop!
