Meritt Elliott

Meritt Elliott

Stylist. Los Angeles

Yesterday we took you inside Emily Current's Los Angeles pad - the former half in CURRENT/ELLIOTT. But as we learned, what would Current be without Elliott (and vice versa)? So, today, we ventured to Meritt Elliott's home and closet and played dress up.... with the help of a few naked Barbie and Ken dolls (in some killer gems nonetheless). As one half of power styling duo MAUDE and the latter half in our favorite denim line CURRENT/ELLIOTT, we had a feeling that the insides of Meritt's closet wouldn't disappoint - and it didn't. Spearheading the "boyfriend jean" craze, these two met each other while attending school in California and realized their penchant (and innate skill) to make girls look powerful and beautiful in boundary-pushing clothes. Just check the pages of NYLON Magazine and the style of Mary Kate Olsen and Reese Witherspoon for reference. We share a joint love for Vanessa Bruno (Meritt's home is walking distance from her LA shop) and have a mutual love for killer motorcycle jackets. As a denim aficionado, she's obsessed with proportion and washes - as evident by her towering collection of vintage blues (ask her and she will tell you - "Denim is my second skin"). Her collection of Repetto's (she has these flats in every color) and vintage slips from The Rose Bowl Flea are only complimented by her anecdotes around her house inspired by her 5 year old daughter Lyric, who acts as Meritt's muse – and it’s no surprise she’s a mini fashionista… her mom has been heralded as a top influential stylist. But behind her YSL bags and Chloe pumps, we spotted an erinkleineberg navy top that Meritt rocked during last years FNO – much to our delight. Her chilled-out LA pad mixed with her beautiful treasures made for one picturesque Cali afternoon. From our world to yours, take a peek inside Meritt Elliott’s fashionable den.

I’m drawing a fashion blank on where I got this. But it’s a showstopper. Never pass up a double C trinket! Emily and I have been collecting such treasures since we were youngens!

Both of these faves were impulse buys while in New York for work. It’s safe to say I got them at Barneys. It’s also safe to say I wore them out of the store with a huge smile on my face!

My daughter, Lyric, squealed when she saw this photo. These Barbies have very scandalous lives, you see. Its no surprise they wear my jewelry while cavorting around town.

I wore this faded orange vintage kimono to my engagement party. At the time, I had very short, black hair and a penchant for red lipstick, so it was fitting! I love these ethnic necklaces with these tops; they are from a road trip to the desert with friends.

I cut an old 80s sequined piece and fashioned it into a party dress for my birthday last summer. I spent forty bucks on it and I swear I’ve never gotten more compliments on anything I’ve ever worn!

I am a sucker for vintage slips in silk, satin or lace in creams and nudes. The Rose Bowl Flea market has been a slip Mecca for me!

I really own a gazillion inexpensive watches and one really nice one. I love rose gold, so when I stumbled upon that watch, I went for it. I prefer masculine watches. I like to pop these little babies into my rotation every now and then. Who says punctuality needs to be redundant?

I have these ballet flats in all of my favorite colors: red, black, nude, beige, glitter and navy. I’m on the taller side, so I can get away with wearing little flats to dressier events. Most importantly, they fit nicely into my purse for impromptu shopping trips after work! They look very rock & roll next to the electric guitar. It was my late husband's, and my daughter likes to strum around on it.

I love this line! I wore this tunic with little high waisted black shorts and tights to a Fashion Night Out event in New York. I got a million compliments on that look. I love lightening it up with nude and gold for spring and summer.

Moto-Jacket madness! I can’t stop buying, designing and dressing clients in these little classics. I love them over floral dresses. Note to self: add vintage pin collection when wearing these jackets. Great conversation pieces!

These gold trinkets have finally found the home they deserve! I collect crystal candle holders and always have candles burning in the house. It’s precious but haphazardly beautiful at the same time. The "I love N.Y." and the charm of the kids kissing were gifts from Emily from almost a decade ago. Still stylish and sweet!

I’m usually a jeans and T-shirt type of girl, but I went through an ultra-feminine top phase. I loved soft, floral blouses with my holiest of jeans. The nude caged heels work with all of the above and go with just about anything. I love seeing how my wardrobe fits so seamlessly into my den’s wall of love. Here, I have framed press articles, my daughter’s artwork, some one-of-a-kind photography, and collected vases and knick knacks.

My daughter is my muse. She loves to wear girly dresses, these mini boots and about a million layered accessories. That vintage white armoire holds many little girl fashion treasures! The turquoise necklace has transcended many seasons and trends.

These beaded blouses are just about as fancy as I’ll go when out to dinner on the weekend. I will usually wear these with vintage or CURRENT/ELLIOTT denim and flats. They are so sparkly on my black buffet (flea market find!) and below these gorgeous photographs.

This bag has got to be the best purse I’ve ever bought. I love the color and impossible structure to it. That watch is my daily timepiece; another great investment that is actually practical! The bracelet was a generous gift from a celebrity client after a gruelling press tour. That guitar was my husband’s. He was a prolific musician who died of cancer in August 2009. He adored that guitar and would be happy to see some of my favorite accessories keeping it company!

These little stunners were a gift from the designer. Who doesn’t love a gold stiletto? They are hanging on a note my daughter wrote that says "I am me and you are you. I love Paris. Let’s meet there." See, I told you she’s my muse! What five year olds think of! It’s sitting next to a Diane Arbus photograph and a graphic print I won in an auction that raised money for cancer research. The horse is in good company!

Are you seeing a theme here? Nude, gold, nude! I love these delicate heels. I’ve worn them to events, dinner, weddings and funerals. I love how classic and understated they are. The large print on the wall is a photo of a tattoo someone got over a skin doodle at Mardi Gras. I found it from an artist on Etsy. The smaller frame has a song from a 1885 hymn book. It’s titled, A Little Bit of Love.
