Mia Moretti

DJ & Designer. New York

Upon entering Mia Moretti’s home, we were floored by her approach to design: angular striped brown/white walls, oversized wicker swings, suede sofas and quirky vignettes. “To me, decorating is about creating stories,” the DJ-turned-recent designer told us. “The same way I tell a story when I'm DJing, I like to tell a story within areas in my house. I'm very much about a vignette, which is probably why we got along so well.”

Moretti greeted us all fresh-faced with tiny flowers woven into her hair. “My friend just did it for me,” she confessed. While we got busy digging through Moretti’s quirky closet collection filled with some of the most offbeat things we’ve seen in a while, the flower child got to work on arranging a variety of fresh bouquets throughout her home. “They make everything look better!” she said, as she began to arrange them by color, while strategically placing them around her space.

While perusing Moretti’s prized possessions, we noticed a theme: a one-of-a-kind collection of Nicole Miller archive pieces…and no, we’re not talking about those jewel-toned, ruched, body-con dresses you may (or may not have) worn to your prom. There was even this Dolce&Gabbana grungy-type wedding dress—“If I designed my wedding dress, it would look exactly like this; I wear it when I'm feeling matrimonial,” Moretti told us—that took us way back to something very reminiscent of Cruel Intentions-meets-The Craft. It’s no secret we’re suckers for anything and everything 90s (see: Clueless, 90 Things We Miss About The 90s, etc.), but Moretti’s collection of vintage treasures brought back a certain nostalgia that makes our job worthwhile.

After showering us with Dunkin’ Donuts—see Jane Larkworthy? The key to The Coveteur’s heart really is through our stomachs—Moretti showed us her latest project: a capsule collection with Pencey, filled with brightly-colored, Beverly Hilton-esque wallpaper prints (you know, like the one we saw at Nicky Hilton and Philip Crangi’s place). Fast-forward a few, and Moretti’s friends, Cleo Wade and (violin-playing band member) Caitlin Moe came by to get in on the action, which quickly turned into a full-on album cover-like shoot. The more the merrier, right?

I'm getting new shoes and giving away shoes all the time, so I'm not too attached to any of them.

There is no method to the madness over here, just the stuff you wear the most usually ends up at the front. I don't have time to meticulously organize everything, although I would love to arrange by color, designer, length, etc. The hooks I used for the clutches are drawer pulls I bought at The Home Depot. It's sort of the poor man's version of a gorgeous trick my friend Mary McDonald uses in all her closets. She's been helping me decorate, but it's an ongoing process!

My rainbow Judy Garland Ferragamos, which Salvatore designed for her in 1938 and re-released last year. There was only one pair in each size made for the six Ferragamo stores in Italy. They came in a gold box with a certificate of ownership. I bought them after a boozy Italian lunch in Portofino, but I still don't regret it. They are the only thing in my closet I won't lend to anyone. If they got ruined (which I'm sure they eventually will), I will be the one responsible.

My favorite picture of my dad and me and a painting I bought at the Antique Mart in Buenos Aires. I could have bought the entire mart if it would have fit in my luggage home. Definitely the best shopping in the world (in my opinion).

I don't really shop anywhere in particular. I collect as I go, opposed to seeking things out. But in terms of my taste, to me decorating is about creating stories. The same way I tell a story when I'm DJing, I like to tell a story within areas in my house. I'm very much about a vignette, which is probably why we got along so well. The blue vase is from Fishs Eddy on 5th ave and 19th. That's a good place to stock up on filler pieces if you are missing something in a collection; they really do have one of everything there!

I've always loved music. I grew up being surrounded by music, my dad and my brother would play the guitar at the dinner table almost every night. These are my favorite memories, and probably why I'm a DJ today. Playing music for other people lets me keep those memories alive!

There is a lady I buy a ton of vintage bags from that has a shop in Jersey, and a great booth at the N.Y. Vintage Fair. She told me this bag was made during the war and was a popular style at the time, because women would order the pieces in the mail and make them themselves. After she told me that I had to buy it! I call the boots my Penny Lane boots.

I always just dress to feel good. I think fashion should be fun. I'm more inclined to follow icons like Yoko Ono, just because she is so multi-dimensional and is never scared to follow an idea, no matter how crazy.

This necklace was handmade in Buenos Aires. I spent hours in the shop looking debating over the handmade bone and leather purses and jewelry. This piece I had to get because it was so unique. My dad had this painting of my mom commissioned by a French artist that was living in Berkely when I was a kid. My mom is in her belly-dancing outfit, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. Of course the fact that my dad had it made for my mom is pretty damn cute too. The last time my mom was at my house she looked at the painting and said "I wish Jacques was still alive to finish this painting." I guess she was feeling modest!

I use a NARS tinted moisturizer because I really don't like a lot of coverage. The best look for me is either just a red lip and mascara or a peachy eye and peachy check if I'm feeling girly. Bobby Brown makes a great cream blush you can use for eyes, lips and cheeks. M·A·C had the best matte red lipstick called "Ruby Woo." I keep it pretty basic.

I love flowers. They make everything look better! I really like to arrange them by color, which is another trick I learned from Mary. Sometimes I buy big mixed bouquets that are pretty cheesy looking in the shop, but if you separate it all you end up with a great assortment. It's nice to cut some really short and just put them in a little glass my your bed.
