Mickey Boardman

TV Personality & Editorial Director, Paper Magazine. New York

Mickey Boardman and his closet have a lot in common: they’re loud, vivacious, full of color (and personality!), eccentric and, most importantly, unapologetic.

After popping by his pal Ariel Foxman’s pad the previous day, we had fair warning of what to expect: the man is a collector. We caught up with the veteran editor at his Royal Palace (he’s royally obsessed and to say he has “Royal Fever” would be an understatement.) In fact, while digging through his sequin-filled closet ― Ashish has even made him several custom pieces ― Mr. Mickey gave us a full-on history lesson to track the roots of his obsession. “In 1985 Hannah Pakula wrote The Last Romantic, a biography of Queen Marie of Romania. It was excerpted in Vanity Fair and I remember a character on the soap opera Another World mentioned Queen Marie. Well, I'm a soap opera addict, and thought if it got plugged on a soap it must be interesting. I read the excerpt in VF and loved it, got the book and that was it.”

Though you can easily spot the man from miles away―his signature oversized, Iris Apfel-esque frames, Lacoste polo and piles of glitzy necklaces―it’s his not-so-secret sequin obsession that clearly caught our eye in his closet of curiosities. “We all have an era or a look that really knocks our socks off and for me it's The Supremes in Las Vegas in the late 60s. Bob Mackie for The Carol Burnett Show. Sparkle, sparkle, sparkle; I can never get enough sparkle,” Boardman confessed. And his favorite color? “Shiny.”

We couldn’t help but play dress-up with Boardman like our very own Barbie. Though he admits to putting to rest his signature “alcoholic housewife” look (“A pair of flat front pants that I hacked the hem off…a wildly patterned ladies’ blouse and some kind of crazy jewelry; I had long hair then that I wore in a little bun,") he does still bust it out for “special occasions.” This was clearly one of them…

Over 20 years ago I was in my favorite vintage store, Screaming Mimi's, and they had a dangly chandelier necklace that I immediately became obsessed with. I love anything drippy and glamorous. My favorite color is shiny. About that time I had been working as an intern at Paper for a while and was developing my 'alcoholic housewife' signature look. A pair of flat front pants that I hacked the hem off, a shell which was usually a T-shirt silhouette, but in some highly-uncomfortable polyester, a wildly patterned ladies’ blouse, and some kind of crazy jewelry. I had long hair then that I wore in a little bun. Once I got that first chandelier necklace I was hooked. I was a big flea market and thrift store addict then. Now as I've gotten older (and have been sober for fifteen years) I've toned things done but still do the big jewelry and a ladies’ handbag. Now I'm more about a uniform of flat front pants and a Lacoste shirt. For special occasions I pull out the old alcoholic housewife looks but now they're Lanvin or Proenza Schouler instead of vintage.

It's been a crazy and amazing two decades at Paper. It was always my favorite magazine. I would torture the man at the newsstand at 6th Ave. and West 4th St. "WHEN is the new issue of Paper coming in?" I'd ask and he'd say, "You JUST got this month's issue three days ago! Leave me alone!" I was a student at Parsons studying fashion design. They didn't really get me there. Meanwhile at Paper they loved me and my crazy outfits. I love the magazine because it approaches things from the perspective that we love what we want to share with our readers. We're fans of the people we cover and I like that. Some subjects that were a hoot to work with include Mariah Carey, Prince, Milla Jovovich, Cat Power, Chloë Sevigny and Björk. Well Björk wasn't exactly a 'hoot' but she was amazing and inspiring. I could have Chloë and Björk do every other cover for Paper for the rest of my career and never get tired of them.

I got a gorgeous 1950s ladies aqua sequined vest at a flea market. It zipped up the back but I wore if with the zipper in the front. Or sometimes in the back. Or with the zipper undone but the top hook done so it flared out. Being a shopaholic editor I always get focused on one thing and overdo it. So I bought that kind of vest in every color. Also we all have an era or a look that really knocks our socks off and for me it's The Supremes in Las Vegas in the late 60s. Bob Mackie for the Carol Burnett show. Sparkle, sparkle, sparkle; I can never get enough sparkle. It always looks fresh and glamorous and fun to me.

I've gone a little bit cuckoo crazy on royalty busts of all sizes. I think the first one was a little tin Queen Mary from the 1930s that I got on eBay. I could stare at it all day long. I also have a gorgeous Emperor Frederick III of Germany bust I got in Berlin at a random gift shop. I'm up to about twenty of them. I'm a royal history nut so I also have a china cabinet packed full of royalty commemorative dishware and doo-dads.

This is part of a twin set that Ikram Goldman, the most amazing retailer in the America, got the designer Ashish to make for me. It has a short-sleeved shell that also says “Mr. Mickey” on it. It's really almost too fabulous. I love it so much. My boss, Kim Hastreiter, came up with ‘Mr. Mickey’because I was debuting my fashion advice column and we needed a name, so she thought of “Ask Mr Mickey.” Before that no one had called me that. It stuck, and now everyone calls me that—I introduce myself as Mr. Mickey.

In 1985 Hannah Pakula wrote The Last Romantic a biography of Queen Marie of Romania. It was excerpted in Vanity Fair and I remember a character on the soap opera Another World mentioned Queen Marie. Well, I'm a soap opera addict, and thought if it got plugged on a soap it must be interesting. I read the excerpt in VF and loved it, got the book and that was it. She was related to every royal of her time (1875-1938) and the book mentioned her sisters, cousins and other relatives and that piqued my interest. I would study the bibliographies of these books, which led me to other royal figures I became interested in—like Marie's first cousins Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain and Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden. Thank God for the Internet, because now I can easily track down the books I want whereas back in the day I had to spend hours scouring used book stores for the books. The day I found Marie of Romania's autobiography I was standing on a ladder at the Strand book store and I honestly cried a little when I saw it on the top shelf. It was like the Holy Grail!

The thing I love about New York is living here makes it impossible to live anyplace else. Love it or hate it you become conditioned to only be able to live right at the heart of things. Also it's one of the world's cultural capitals so all the most talented and fascinating people either live here or pass through here. My favorite places are: 1. Indochine!!! Most glamorous restaurant in town! 2. Bergdorf Goodman. I love that store and it just gets better and better. 3. The Hispanic Society. An amazing museum way up town that is always empty. I love Spanish culture, so this place is cute for me. 4. Eva's. It's a little take out restaurant on 8th street that is all bodybuilders and hippies. They have good vegetarian food that I like. 5.The Boom Boom Room. Prettiest room in town. You can't not feel glamorous when you're there.

Back in the days of the Lira I would go to Rome a few times a year and shop like a Saudi Princess at Missoni. Stuff was so cheap. I used to wear only Missoni. I get on kicks and like to wear only one designer. When I lived in Madrid in the 80s I wore only Adolfo Dominguez. I also went through a Marc Jacobs phase.

That little hat is from Alber Elbaz's surprise 50th birthday party. Paper's events and consulting division Extra Extra produced the party. Alber is a gem. My favorite designers for me to wear are Missoni, Lanvin ladies, Dries Van Noten. In general I love Proenza Schouler, Raf Simons, Marni, Prada, Rick Owens, Dries, Thom Browne, Marc Jacobs. My lifestyle role model is Diane von Furstenberg and the fashion designer I'd most like to have adult relations with are Jack and Lazaro from Proenza.

Dana Lorenz is a good friend and I have tons of her jewelry. It's on a tray by Georges Briard who was a 1950s, 60s and 70s glass designer I was obsessed with. I have about a hundred pieces of his stuff. The black banana is a piece of ceramic art by Carol Lee. I love art that looks like food. The Juicy Fruit pack is a piece of fabric art by Megan Whitmarsh. I don't know who made the ceramic chocolate bar but it's from Creative Growth Art Center and amazing place in Oakland that teaches mentally and physically disabled people to make art.
