Morgan Collett

Co-Owner, SATURDAYS Surf.  New York

Morgan Collett, one of the founders of SATURDAYS Surf NYC has grown up with the waves. Born in Newport Beach, he attended an elementary school that was not only situated on the beach, but also enforced the love of water (they were able to leave class when the surf was big and watch their janitor ride the waves). Not one to be tied down, Collett went to college in Orange County, but soon thereafter moved to Florence, Italy to continue his studies. After spending a few months in LA, he was destined for NYC, and essentially made his move to the East Coast overnight. Once in NYC, he was presented with an offer at ACNE, a role he maintained for three years, managing the beloved Swedish brand for the North American market. With his entrepreneurial nature kicking in, he wanted to venture out on his own, and launched SATURDAYS, a surf/coffee shop located on Crosby Street in New York that in just under a year, has garnerned a devoted (and global following). Their tees have been featured in international publications, and were even showcased in select J.CREW stores, an item that was hand picked by J.CREW Creative Director Jenna Lyons.

I love scarves. I only use them when it's freezing outside, but I seem to have quite the collection. The motorcycle helmet is actually a gift from a friend of mine. It’s an old French Military issue moto helmet. I snowboard quite a bit so I use these goggles all the time.

Our clothing company started out as a T-shirt collection so these tees I owe a great deal to. The design is very clean and modern, a timeless feel is what we were trying to accomplish.

Matt Costa was a local Brooklyn kid who moved to Maine to build boats. Crazy I know, but he also owns a wonderful sunglasses company. I love the grey color of these frames. Very unique.

Well, my friend is an extremely talented designer and his friend is a photographer. He basically saw that shot and made a small run of tees with the print on them. So many people freak out when I wear that T-shirt, but they can’t get them any where and he won’t make more, so it's pretty special.

The necklace I found at a swap meet in Brooklyn. I was playing that little thing all day after I bought it. My harmonica influence came from my dad. He is a musician and is incredibly talented at the harp. I have tried for years to learn it but failed at each attempt. I have picked it back up over the past year and am still working on it. Practice makes perfect! I DJ a lot around the city so I love all music. There is something about vinyl that is really sexy and timeless. I don’t have massive collection but it’s growing. I am trying to buy more unique albums to keep on vinyl.

Those are my all winter boots for N.Y.C. They took a while to break in, but now the leather is molded to my foot and they are wonderful! Neil Young is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I just recently started to collect records and his Harvest Moon album was the first one I purchased. I love listening to it from start to finish.

I think I had a job for a total of three months where I had to dress up in slacks and a collared shirt to attend work. I didn’t enjoy having to wear a uniform like that if it wasn’t intended on my own behalf. T-shirts have a way of being even more sophisticated than the traditional collared shirting. I think that’s why I love them. It's no longer a social must to be buttoned up to the neck to be taken seriously.

Friends of mine in Costa Mesa, California, started this optical company and they are killing it. Their frames and lenses are made of the highest quality UV protection and durability. These are the Rolls Royce of sunglasses in my opinion.

Well, snowboarding was what defined my childhood. That and surfing, but snowboarding was what I really strived to make my living at. My brother and I were amateurs and would compete around the country, as well as travel the world snowboarding. When it came down to choosing the path of a professional athlete or going to university, school won. I still love it and snowboard as much as possible. I feel like a stronger snowboarder now than I did as a kid. Kind of funny.

I think the most important thing for me about board shorts is fit. I need it to be a good fit, not too long, not too short. I love solid board shorts with checks or stripes. Muted colors are the best I think too.

Well, the picture directly below the board shorts is a photograph of my mom and dad when they were married. I saw this at my grandmother’s house and I thought it was so beautiful I told her I needed a copy. The board shorts are made by a company in Costa Mesa, CA. The company has been around since the 60s and is still a family run business.

The hat is something I randomly bought from a vintage store years ago in the West Village. I felt the need to have a good hat and my head is so big I have trouble finding some that fit. When I tried this one on I immediately bought it and wore it around all day. Strangely enough, I don’t think I have worn it out since. The shirt is from our first capsule collection. It’s a great horizontal stripe shirt and the fabric is extremely soft. This shirt defines a very proud moment in starting my own company.

These are a pair of glasses I found at a flea market. They are a well-known optical company from the fifties, but I haven’t replaced the lenses with darker tint. It's on the list of to do’s.
