Natalie Joos

Casting Agent; Fashion Consultant.  New York

We’ve been long followers of the style choices of Natalie Joos, one of New York City’s finest Casting Directors. From Tommy Ton to Scott Schuman, her vintage-inspired ensembles have been documented in countless fashion blogs to date (we will never forget when she was snapped outside of Milk Studios in mid-conversation with ADR rocking dainty ankle socks). Born and raised in Belgium, Joos began her career working as a personal assistant to Glenn O’Brien (dudes, go get his book), and later became the studio manager for photographer Craig McDean. But then, in 2003, she jumped ship and set up her own shop, lending her education in famous faces to the runways and presentations of Hugo Boss, Helmut Lang and Philip Lim. She’s also become iconic for her unique sense of style, housing a vintage collection that rivals that of both Decades and Resurrection. But since her move from Belgium to NYC, her style has gradually become more “Americanized”. “I like the preppy, Americana look. Since I moved from Belgium to New York I feel I have been the victim of slow but steady Americanization. And after living in NY for over thirteen years it’s only natural I am influenced by brands like Ralph Lauren or J.Crew” states Joos. And with her latest venture, Tales of Endearment (her blog which she launched last year), Joos, like The Coveteur, has been peeping inside the closets of some of today’s fashionable startlets – but always incorporating a vintage spin. She’s been continuing her work with Mark Fast (we love a Canadian), and each season, she gets to order a new main collection dress. Lucky girl. Currently en route, a baby blue fringe dress. If only we got to shoot that…

I used to work with Tsumori in Paris. This woman has more imagination and appreciation for color and print than anyone I know! I miss wearing her clothes. There is nothing else like it. This dress is two-layered. It's black felt with cut out dogs over white cotton. And if you look very closely, the dogs have gold beaded collars on.

I found the jacket at Fluke, my favorite vintage store in Williamsburg. I go visit when I am bored or when I need inspiration. It’s close to my house and can be a nice little distraction between laundry and vacuuming. Fluke always has fun and interesting pieces you don’t find anywhere else. The jacket was a hit at Art Basel in Miami.

Jacket, Vintage Emanuel Ungaro; Pin, CHANEL

The necklace is from the closing sale of a big wardrobe rental place in New York. It was a huge warehouse in Midtown and they were selling decades worth of collector’s pieces. This turned out to be the only thing I bought. It’s very Miu Miu I think.

It’s not a bunny! It’s a dog! His name is Achille. My mom bought him for me on the ferry from Belgium to England when I moved to London in 1996. It was a souvenir and he’s been with me ever since. I wonder how he feels about you dressing him up like that...he looks miserable!

I like the preppy, Americana look. Since I moved from Belgium to New York I feel like I have been the victim of slow but steady Americanization. And after living in N.Y. for over thirteen years it’s only natural I am influenced by brands like Ralph Lauren or J.Crew. I don’t mind. It’s comfortable and chic. I got the cabinet at the Brimfield Fair in Massachusetts. It took a few months to get here and it’s a bit crooked but it’s the central piece in my living room. It needed a bit of soul.

Dress, Mark Fast; Necklace, Vintage

I bought the top along with some other amazing pieces a couple of years ago. I think I was actually nauseous when I walked out the store because I spent so much money in there. The necklace is from a vendor on the street in Soho.

This is a really really unique and special piece. It's from an American designer who was quite big in the 1960s. The top reminds me of Balenciaga. It's a bit restricting and the fabric is heavy but it gives the nicest silhouette. I have a dress by him as well, and funnily I bought both pieces at Jill Stuart's vintage salon, only years and years apart.

The skirt is a present from Louise Pinson, the owner of Palm Beach Vintage where I went to shoot with Jen Brill for my blog, Tales of Endearment. She knew I loved the skirt so she sent it to me as a thank you.

One of my sexier pieces. It's quite tight and accentuates the curves, especially my butt! Did I mention this is my favorite label? I would love to do a Tales collaboration with them. The blanket underneath is Hermès and was a present from my best friend, Anouck Lepère, to celebrate my birthday and our ten year friendship.

Dress, Miu Miu

It’s a funny story about the dress actually. I bought it during Paris Fashion Week at Printemps because I had run out of nice things to wear. I was going to see CHANEL, which is always towards the end of the week, so I thought I’d just buy a dress and return it the next day...we’ve all done it. It wasn’t cheap and I really did not need another expensive dress. I had a nice gentleman helping me with my purchases at the store. We spent at least an hour trying on all different dresses. Obviously I did not tell him my plan. But by the time I left I even knew his name. Nice guy. So I get to CHANEL half an hour early because I did not read the invitation right. I am in this pink dress, in this huge space, with barely anyone there. And photographers are taking pictures of the dress. Very conspicuous indeed. So I sit down and chat to a friend while the space fills up. A few minutes later I look around and who has just taken a seat a few rows above me? The Printemps guy. I don’t know if he recognized me but he definitely spotted me. I mean, I am bright pink in a sea of black and white. So needless to say I could not return the dress, but I am actually happy I didn’t because it’s great and timeless. I’ve worn it to weddings in the summer.
