Nevena Borissova

Nevena Borissova

Owner, Curve Boutique.  Los Angeles

When we were first welcomed into Nevena Borissova's sweet L.A. pad, it became clear that this girl has no shortage of accomplishments—and we're not even talking about “the Usher days,” as Borissova coyly referred to them as. As the owner of Curve—a go-to boutique for McQueen, Wang and Theyskens collections, with outposts in N.Y.C, L.A., San Fran and Miami—Nevena has a keen eye for the unique. We’ve popped by Curve on many occasions, but our last trip to the NYC store certainly reaffirmed our love. We’ve got to say, from the buying to the merchandising, Borissova’s got consistency across the country. Although a particular line carried at the NY outpost, Breeze by KD (Google it, stat!) has ignited an unhealthy and dangerous addiction. But as much as we dig the store, the true holy grail was Borrisova's personal wardrobe. Never-made-it-to-production runway shoes? Check. A stockpile of Céline? Check. She also let us in a very tight-lipped secret store in Paris where, “all the ballers go” for their rare CHANEL. We figured it’s only fair to share, so… Catherine B in Saint-Germain on rue Guisarde. Borissova’s style culminates 15 years in the biz working with everyone from the Missoni family to lunching with Steven Tyler. (Yes, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.) When it comes to her style, Borissova is all about sequins and colour; although if her 4-year-old son, Dorian had it his way, mommy would be in neon from noon ‘til night. Dorian’s got a killer sense of style, too – wonder we he got that from? – but he doesn’t exactly appreciate the finer things in life yet. While digging through her watch drawer, Nevena spilled the beans on a timepiece that was M.I.A. “I had a little rose gold Cartier that I loved so much, but Dorian threw it away in the garbage few years ago.” Oops? No worries. You're forgiven, D.

This is a Stephen Jones piece I bought for Curve. It never sold, so I use it as decoration, and I love it. It gives me a British wedding feel. The sequined top came from another gem, a vintage store called C Madeleine's in Miami. This place is vintage heaven, and you often rub shoulders with people like Karl Lagerfeld. It's a must-see if you're ever in the area.

Curve was one of the first stores to ever carry Iro and I bought the collection first when we were opening in N.Y.C. Since then we opened Miami, San Francisco, and Sag Harbor in the Hamptons. We have the collection in all of our locations and it's been a true pleasure to watch them grow. The story of the leather bra here is simple: I asked them to make it after that groundbreaking editorial Emmanuelle Alt did for French Vogue. We all loved it, but there were very few orders. I begged them to make it just for Curve, but they wouldn't. They gifted me the sample.

My style is eclectic. I like piling it on and will always be a bejewelled girl at heart. I gravitate to 20s art deco and it’s often visible in what I do. As I am getting older, my style is getting more polished and refined. I have been focusing on beauty as well. I live for Terry Lawton and her incredible anti-aging work. And if they discontinue Rescue by CosMedix, I would turn into a mummy.

I worked for The Missoni family for four years as a stylist during the Oscar season, before they opened the store in L.A. We would set up a suite at the Chateau Marmont and dress celebs. It was great fun and also very successful. I have worn all of the pieces many, many times, mainly during Missoni events when I worked for them. The leopard print at the end I wore to the opening of our Miami store.

My love affair with Isabel started in London at a random store more than a decade ago. Her translation of ethnic and vintage through a Parisian eye has reached a phenomenon. The head-dress is a wedding crown of sort from Bulgaria. I started collecting costumes and Byzantine jewelry a few years ago. The flats are trashed; I have five pairs and I wear them constantly.

I love jewelry so much. It used to be 30% of our business at Curve, when I was involved in sales. Ornamentation has a very special place in my heart: I channel romance, history, ethnicity, longevity, and eccentricity, but rarely fashion when I buy or wear jewelry. Catherine B is the secret place on Rue Guisarde in St. Germain in Paris. I love that place! I buy most of the vintage in Europe or Arlene Abelow—the antique broker in L.A.—for both Curve and me.

I bought this sculpture at a store in Miami. I frequent the Rose Bowl, Wertz Brothers, the vintage Paris store on La Brea, Clignancourt flea market in Paris, Modern One and Douglas Gardens in Miami—it’s a thrift store by the airport where I bought the coolest 60s furniture ever, and a ton of Pucci clothes for dirt cheap. This belt has razors on it; it was never produced. It was only made for the show, which is what the sales person told me at the closing of a pricey sale. It all came from Paris, so I tend to trust them.
