Reece Solomon

Designer and Co-Founder, Reece Hudson. New York

“The best advice I ever received was, ‘The most successful designers listen to what everyone has to say, but in the end, just do what they want. The worst designers do the same, they’re just delusional.’ So I asked in response, ‘How do I know which I am?’ to which he replied, ‘You don’t.’”

When it comes to grading some of today’s designers, we’re quick to place Reece Solomon of Reece Hudson (guys, Hudson isn’t her last name!) on the “successful” part of the spectrum. She’s managed to seamlessly bridge the ever-growing gap between designer bags coming out of ready-to-wear houses and derivative contemporary brands with a collection that continues to be carried on the arms (and across the bodies) of just about every girl at Coachella and fashion week. (Looking at you, Leandra Medine and Hannah Bronfman; but, really, can you blame ‘em?) It goes without saying the honing your skills at Proenza Schouler and rag & bone definitely helps in gaining a discerning eye; while calling upon your whip smart friend to head up the business end of things is a wise move in creating a cult-worthy line of collectibles.

We caught up with Solomon and her bestie-turned-biz partner, Max, at her N.Y.C. abode and brought our friends from ELLE along for the ride. Solomon had laid out some of her finest and favorite pieces and then gave us creative freedom to uh, run wild, in her personal collection. For a girl whose first designer purchase of a black Fendi Baguette in high school, – we were probably stockpiling Jansport backpacks – it goes without saying that she has an expert eye and innate sense of style. Among the stand out selection were archive Proenza pieces, vintage sequin Oscar de la Renta pants (read that one again – vintage, sequin, Oscar de la Renta, pants!), and, of course, Céline. But perhaps the real topic of conversation – besides the bags, obviously – was Solomon’s treasured art collection. We’re talking Andy Warhol and Basquiat, shot by Ricky Powell (and gifted to her by Powell personally!), Marilyn Minter, Baron Von Fancy and Cov-homeboy Curtis Kulig. Paging the MOMA…
