Interior Designer and Co-owner of Edon Manor. New York
Before hitting 30, Ryan Korban has managed to reign king of downtown N.Y.C.'s interior design space. He's spearheaded numerous covetable commercial and residential projects, mixing his use of old-world ideals, most notably his innate sense of lost romance. His extensive work with Alexander Wang has been well documented globally, and his celebrity clientele reads like a list of N.Y.C.'s finest it kids: Jessica Stam, James Franco, Vanessa Traina, and Natasha Poly. His approach and mantra is simple: he toys with the idea that our living space can be exact and polished - while still comfortable and supremely livable. With a spectacularly captivating eye, Korban is one of the most meticulous self-made and untrained stylists today, ensuring that the spaces he defines are both attractive and inspirational. His technique is to incorporate something unbelievably ornate, rich, or brazen and strip these unique pieces of all its aforementioned connotations; reinventing them entirely. The result? You’ll have to see for yourself...
I’ve been wearing [these boots] since I was 19. It’s hard to find colors other than black that I like, so these are certainly a treasure. I like the color of the laces as well, as I have worked hard to keep them together over the years. The crane is an African one. He was a birthday present from my best friend and remains one of the best gifts I have ever gotten.
Yes, I love Balenciaga. Fit, proportion, quality, material…it’s an A+ with me. I love how you can see the fit without a body in it. That is always an instantly good sign to me. I also love the sales team there. Both corporate and retail, they are great. Daisy at Balenciaga helps me find some amazing things. I think I might like seeing her more than the clothes!
These are my favorite sunglasses. They look good on everyone’s face. I ordered them for Edon Manor one season and we sold out so fast. I think we did about 5 re-orders on them and I managed to acquire 4 pairs on my own as back up.
I love Burberry, always will and always have. Classic and undeniably British. I like who I am when I’m in their stuff. I’ve been wearing it since childhood. I have pieces from middle school, high school, college and current season. A classic Burberry coat is never trying…it always just is. I really appreciate that.
The mixing of materials in this jacket I really like. This is one of my favorite paintings. I love the frame-it's antique brass. The piece is from Italy via Flair Home Collection- my Mecca! It’s like what Barney's [is to] clothing.
I love the fit and color of this jacket. The blue and black mix is such a good one. This jacket feels so English to me.I love the fit and color of this jacket. The blue and black mix is such a good one. This jacket feels so English to me.
Again, my obsession really is home accessories. Crystal, chrome, skins, boxes, lighting, candles… all of it. My main obsession has been ashtrays. My collection is becoming a problem. I have actually stopped myself for a bit. They are in every corner, cabinet and crack of my apartment. Here are just some of my favorites. Some are Italian '70s, some are French '30s, there are Lucite ones, glass ones, chromes ones, porcelain ones, Versace, Hermès, Cartier. They all have a story - some good and actually some bad. I also am obsessed with the perfume Kilian. I have his travels bottles scattered all throughout my house because I can’t stop spraying it and his packaging is to DIE for. The scent it so sophisticated and complicated. It helps mask the smoke.
I kind of have an obsession with the old man shoe sections. I always find the best stuff there. I also love going to local shoe stores in other cities, especially in Europe. You find the most amazing things. You don’t have to go to the most popular designers to find the best product in places like London. I got these shoes at Russell and Bromley (the best shoe store ever) and they are my favorite pair I own. I think I paid 150 pounds. It’s one of those places where they sell you a shoe horn, leather buffer and suede spray at the check out, love that. It’s obvious and yes cliché that I love black, but I do. I have a much better time using black when I’m working because interior really allows you to use it in a more dynamic way. I’ve been really into black trims and accents as a way to frame a space. It’s an idea I really explored in this apartment.
I love Lazaro’s jewelry. Romantic and dangerous at the same time. I wear these two rings everyday, they never come off except for this picture. The few times they haven’t been on my hands…I hated the way my fingers felt. It was like leaving the house without your pants.
I love the proportion of this piece. It’s so compact…I’m really into it. It definitely doesn’t fall into the bar wear category. It’s what I use when I have to be “business Ryan”. Scary, right? I came to a point where I realized that pulling crumpled papers out of a slouchy bag wasn’t going to cut it anymore. When I have my briefcase the whole week it means it was a good one, filled with contracts.
My baby Zebra was a long time in the making. The process actually took about six months. Classic taxidermy in Europe is a much different process than here in the U.S. For one thing, you have to wait for the animals to pass away in zoos-its illegal to kill anything of that kind. Then I worked with a taxidermist to create a pose for the mannequin before the skin was wrapped and dried. He’s the ultimate in exotic. My life really revolves around the home and furniture. Home accessories are my weakness. I could live without clothes, but not furniture. The console is a back laquer piece with brass detailing. It is French, 1930s and it’s one my favorite pieces. The scarf - simple, easy to wear, great quality and has very little fuss or attachment to the brand.
Two of my favorite materials are suede and shagreen (stingray). I struggle with brown, but I think when you get the right shade it can be really incredible. That’s how I feel about this color. Shagreen really is one of the few materials that literally takes my breath away every single time.
Another Balenciaga jacket… I’m embarrassed now… I love the mixing of materials in the same color. I do it with furniture everyday and it has really become a big part of my interior aesthetic. My interiors really revolve around three keys words: sex, romance and fantasy. If I can accomplish all three of these elements, that’s when I feel success in a project. That is what I admire about fashion. Their constant desire to be sexy, It’s missing in my industry so I really turn to fashion to feed that craving.
I like good cut and great material… that’s really what it boils down to. I use this weekender all the time. It’s the perfect size for two days. It’s been everywhere. The painting was a gift from my mother when I graduated college - it was my first really great piece of art. I love fur especially in the home. I think its sexy and it turns me on. Who wouldn’t want to have sex on it and who doesn’t like being turned on? I say no one. So, it belongs in every room and on every surface…if you catch my drift.
