Sasha Charnin Morrison

Fashion Director, Us Weekly & Author, "Secrets of Stylists". New York

Sasha Charnin Morrison is the kind of girl who needs a book (or maybe a motion picture!) to share her life stories. Hold that thought! She’s actually already authored Secrets Of Stylists ,which is a must-read for anyone looking to get their Jimmy Choo in the door.

Between her Stephen Sprouse dresses once worn by Kate Moss and purchases she made post-getting “Annie rich” (her father is Martin Charnin a.k.a. the genius behind Annie!), her social media bag hookups, the cameo she made in Pat Benatar’s music video (we can’t make this stuff up!), Charnin’s got enough gossip to fill years worth of Us Weekly.

Charnin, her husband, and her style savvy boys, Gus and Oliver, welcomed us into her home with a spread of Smartfood popcorn, vino and even a fruit platter waiting for us. Instead of getting the grand closet tour by Charnin, she deferred the task to her sons. The boys eagerly brought us into their room to flash their massive selection of fancy footwear. Oliver even rolled out the Rolls Royce (or should we say Bugatti and Ferrari?) of footwear: his favorite pair of Under Armour sneakers that are engineered like the luxury cars!

When it comes to Charnin’s personal variety, she has plenty. “Accessories are the most important things in anyone’s life; my mom and stepmother both drilled that into my head,” she told us. “Shoes and bags provide unconditional love, whether I’m a size 8/10/12.”

And Charnin spares no expense when tracking down a particular purse. Case and point: Her hot pink Céline she first spied on Bag Snob. She harassed everyone from editors to Barneys to Bergdorf's in N.Y.C. to Maxfield’s in L.A. “'No’ is never an option or an answer!” she said. With a little help from a random tweeter, The Closet Squad, — “Why she cared in the first place floored me!” —Charnin targeted it in (of all places) North Carolina. Now that is dedication, people!

I needed a “drop off” shoe for when I took the kids to school. The ballerina soles were dead. I was getting cold and needed something that got me to school on time (while looking foxy). Since we don’t go out anymore, dressing up and doing a runway walk is the eight blocks it takes to get to school. I wanted those Marants like mad, but they were sold out everywhere. So I got the cooler snakeskin Giuseppes, which helped kick off the trend for me last year. And then I finally got the Isabel Marants, after waiting for months. Then my little fashionista boys started becoming obsessed with basketball sneakers. I know more about LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Cam Newton than I ever thought I would. They are my guys’ icons. I buy all the clothes in the family and these little covetables belong to my sons, Oliver and Gus, who are 10 years old. They're twins, but they have very different tastes. When they were born, my icon for them was Lenny Kravitz. Then I was fawning over baby Beckham and his skinny jeans. Now, Nike and adidas entered our life courtesy of their friends—and Justin Biebs. To satisfy my shoe-whoreyness I am at kids’ Footlocker every Tuesday checking out new releases. They drop weekly. Oliver is most drawn to the trends. Gus wants function with a little color. So, all of those are their kicks. The Crocs? They love ‘em—what can I say?

Accessories are the most important things in anyone’s life. My mom and stepmother both drilled that into my head. Shoes and bags. Unconditional love whether I’m an 8/10/12. I am lucky to have been blessed with a marvellous eye for detail and can spot the chic. I give myself that pat on the back. If I get a compliment on my lug sole hiker boots from my salad guy or people on the subway, I have done something right. And I live for that. Tommy Ton? Sartorialist? I don’t need them. My Instagrammer’s and my salad guy love my Alaïa. The first shoe purchase that meant something to me was a silver heel from The Ritz. I love them. It was a cute shoe I wore with everything. My first bag was a Prada that was pastel and rubberized I think. Sounds disgusting. It was like $150. My father made me return it! I think I was 12? Then he got “Annie” rich and then I went cray-cray. Cartier mixed with Fiorucci. I was dipping into hi-low back in 1980.

Great, outstanding shoes and bags have always been my focus and strength. I almost get mad when I don't get a compliment from the guy at the place I get lunch when I'm working a good shoe. Or someone on the street. That's become so important to me…they're my validation. I guess I have always had a good eye picking a showpiece. A great heel. I appreciate it. I want to have something you don't have. I dress as me. And don’t give a rat’s ass what anybody thinks. I move on and don’t create an illusion of something I’m not.

My personal style all depends on the season and shoe. I dress from the shoe and up. But “Jewish hippie” I think is me. I have also been known as a “Jewess Princess,” “Charo of the fashion editors,” and “The Gaza Stripper.” My style: it’s very child on the 60s mixed with the 70s in Greenwich Village, which is where I grew up. I am a kimono and caftan lover. I love a poncho and knee-high boots. My go to designers are Rachel Pally, because I love her jersey dresses and caftans. Norma Kamali for anything—she designed my wedding dress with matching motorcycle jacket, twenty three years ago. Love her. She’s a great tailor. DKNY opaque tights—cannot live without those. I have a fondness for really great olive military coats. But they all need to be a cut in a certain way: slightly A-line. I think I served in the military in another life or something, because how can someone own fifteen of the same things, and justify that they’re all different? I love coats as dresses too. But when I work, it’s all black to blend in. I can’t be bothered with delicate designer dresses and great things when I need to be on my knees hemming Snooki’s maternity dress, you know?

The needlepoint Miss Sicily. Every bag I own has a story or a history and a purpose. I create looks in my head of how I will make these things work. This bag was going to be my “Italian widow” bag. I never see myself as one of the young and slutty Dolce girls… you know in the ads? I always see myself as one of the Anna Magnani-like ladies, the widows... Vito Andolini’s mother (Don Corleone’s mother, in the Godfather II) with that bag. Which means I would wear it with a flat black shoe that had a pointy toe and a big coat by Marni or Moschino, hair back, big jewelled earrings… doing runway down 7th Avenue. Don’t get me started on where my Prada fringed bag collection takes me…

I love these and always forget I have them. I always tell my friend, Caryn, to slap me when I reach for another leopard pump. The necklace retailed for like $8000! It definitely counts to have someone like Vera as a godmother. Yes—she kind of adopted me years ago, when I met her when she was Vogue with my stepmother. They were both tortured Condé Nast editors. Everyone is jealous of the H&M. It’s so good. I need to fill up those gumball machines!

I will admit, I was moved when I saw that bitch, Victoria Beckham (I kid, I kid!) with the Louis Vuitton fox tail. I get that way: Rihanna used to have a bag, and I needed it too. I had to have one. There it is. I love the fringed suede and the little logo. The ombré tail is enough to make anyone mental. Those parking signs are the boys’. And the ruler is Pottery Barn Kids.

I love YSL. I wear Opium now. I was reminded of it recently, as well as Belle D'Opium from YSL. My mother wore Opium when I was a kid. I feel like everything she did in the early 70s I'm doing now. She had a Cher look; Half Breed days. What’s not to love and want to emulate? But this lineup is Oliver's mens’ fragrances. Gwen at US gave Ollie the Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue Living Stromboli Pour Homme and he priced it! Can you believe? He now only wants to look at super expensive mens’ cologne. Little label whore. The Hot Pink Céline. I saw it on Bag Snob and lost my shit. I needed it immediately. It was Resort 2012. I already had an orange, but I needed the hot pink. I was on every list: Barneys, Bergdorf’s. I did some crime by asking a friend to bump me up and get it for me—that didn’t work. I called the press office; I asked various editors; I had my shoe guy on the case; Someone in L.A. at Maxfield. And none who could be had! They only ordered a small number but had a hundred and eighty people on the list for thirty bags. The Céline store in Miami was barren and N.Y. hadn’t quite opened. I was out of my mind—and “no” is never an option or an answer! Finally, a random tweeter known as “The Closet Squad” read my ridiculous tweets about this bag and told me Kirna had it. I called and they didn’t. Closet Squad apologized profusely—why she cared in the first place floored me!—and said to give her two hours. Was this a sting? A counterfeit deal? Why did she care? Then a tweet came to call Mary Sue. Sometimes you’re so insane and desperate you don’t do background checks. I called. Scared. Hung up. Like a teenager. Then called back asking for her and where she was located. And then she told me North Carolina, and she knew who I was (caller ID?). It was a store called Capitol and they sell everything: McQueen, Alaïa, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Mary Katrantzou, Oscar de la Renta, The Row, Valentino and Céline. And they had one bag in that color. And it was all mine! It turns out that @TheClosetSquad has hopeless, pathetic clients like myself who need the fix. And she, Jill, helps you out.
