Stacy London

TV Host; Author; Co-Founder & Stylist-In-Chief of Style For Hire. New York

As devout watchers of What Not to Wear (our moms are major fans, too), we were a little starstruck stepping into Stacy London's Brooklyn digs. You can imagine our surprise when, while giving us the grand tour, London explained how she's "getting away from 'rules' in general"...say what? After first introducing us to her scene-stealing kitty, Al, she showed us her latest purchase (as in, from earlier that day): a new CHANEL from Bergdorf's, rendering her claim that her taste in 'It Bags' is a "little doofus-y" totally invalid.
And while London's digs seemed ultra-femme at first, a closer look revealed offbeat, kitschy tchotchkes, like her collection of toy dinosaurs and dragons, and amazing art, with "gritty" works by Nay and photog Kanako Sasaki. "Most people don’t like it. But I love it, so it stays put." We also caught her amazing Irving Penn print, a beloved memento from her time working with the late photographer at Vogue.
London shared her list of international shoe-shopping (and jewelry!) haunts, as well as her favorite shoe movie moment (Cher's post-shopping scene in Moonstruck). She filled us in on her latest ventures, including her latest book, The Truth About Style, and her collaboration with Sorrelli on a line of jewelry inspired by "Transformers for girls." We also learned about an important cause to London: "I have a private sale every year for friends and family. I sell clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories, all for $40 each, and whatever I make I match and donate to the Animal Medical Hospital in New York City."
After chatting cocktails and BK watering holes, we had to wrap up our shoot with a round of muddled mojitos and a little kitchen karaoke to her then go-to, "Call Me Maybe." Ms. London, you're our kind of host.

I’ve been wearing the hot pink PS1 for day and been switching between a Jimmy Choo raffia clutch that’s black, white, fuchsia and red and a Hunting Season bright yellow embossed leather clutch. Clearly, I am into colored bags.

Favorite shoe moment from a movie: Moonstruck. When Cher unwraps all her purchases while drinking red wine in front of the fire in Brooklyn before she goes to the opera with Nicholas Cage. She tries on that velvet d’Orsay kitten heel in burgundy, wearing just a slip and goes to the mirror to try on some lipstick.

The closets were custom built by Reform. My biggest requirement was that they look even. I didn’t want to walk in and feel like I was on a ship or something. I feel like it’s more like a black hole and things go in but don’t always come out. It’s starting to overflow again, so I have a private sale every year for friends and family. I sell clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories, all for $40 each, and whatever I make I match and donate to the Animal Medical Hospital in New York City.

Carmindy [make-up artist from What Not to Wear], and I talk about boys and nail polish, not make up and clothes, really.

I have no elaborate personal beauty regimen for makeup unless I’m working. Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil, NARS Cleansing Milk, Epicuren Propolis Toner, NARS Eye Cream, Rodin Face Oil, and EltaMD sunscreen….actually, that’s pretty elaborate. Make up-wise, I’m pretty hopeless on my own. I swear by Laura Mercier concealer, NARS Liquid Orgasm Highlighter, Korres Cream Blush, and any bright happy pink lip color I can find.

I got the mannequin on Atlantic Ave. from an antique furniture dealer. A friend knew I was looking for one and called and said he’d driven by it. It never occurs to me to dress her up aside from that pearl bib which landed on her and never left. Maybe it’s because I get sick of dressing mannequins on WNTW.

When it comes to popular 'It' bags, I’m kind of a doofus. I never buy the color everyone else buys and then always wind up wondering if I should have gotten the 'It' color. But I loved this tobacco-y brown. [I] did the same thing with a Céline Phantom. Bought it in burgundy, not gray, not black. Still, it’s pretty awesomesauce-y.

An ex bought [the Collier de Chien] for me for a birthday one year and I wear it constantly. It’s just the right combo of edgy and classic. I’m coveting both the silver and gold versions (sans leather) now. The artwork is by a jewelry designer named Jean Paris who designed and sketched in the 50s and 60s for Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. One of my closest friend’s mother was friends with him and had stacks of these. One year, she gave me a few. I adore them.

Who can honestly claim that love isn’t a drug?

Stacy London

Prints, like accessories, should be in proportion to the person wearing them. Also, so many women fear that prints will make them look bigger. But cut always takes precedence over print in terms of flattering the body, so go ahead! Life would be so boring if all we had were solids. Print is just a great way to show off your personality and create visual interest in an outfit. The photo is called “Sad Vader” by Alex Brown and the neon and scribble drawings are by Dan Miller.

It’s funny but my rule for a shoe like this goes for bags too: the less you think it goes with anything, then it goes with just about everything. Ah, the book. It has been a labor of love and I’m just relieved it’s finally [come] out! It isn’t a “how to” book as much as it is a “why we don’t” book about style. Big fan of Liya and what lemlem is trying to do for women in Africa. What is so wonderful about the pieces is that they fabrics are 100 per cent true to the style of the indigenous population, but the way Liya designs them they are so modern, even urban, in the way they look. That’s why I think the pieces are so timeless. Kate Moss will forever be my favorite model. Well, Christy and Linda are close behind. Abstract flower painting is by Jessica Martin.

My first inspiration was ombré. The idea of color that looks as if it is being pulled by some invisible gravitational force. It started there and morphed into this concept of switching parts as well. Favorite cocktails include: Bourbon or rye Manhattans in winter, and gin, vodka or tequila custom muddles chez London in summer. To be honest, I wore this necklace [for all of one] summer with a chambray shirt and either shorts, jeans, or casual skirts. There is something about this piece that works so much better with casual wear rather than wearing it with a cocktail dress. Rhinestones are versatile. They can punch up casual in an unexpected way. Sometimes wearing them for evening can feel antiquated…at least on an old lady like me.

I don’t recommend massive accessories on a very petite person or very small ones on a larger person. Basically keeping accessories balanced with the size of your stature helps them complement or complete a look with out distracting from the woman wearing them.

For the black addicts, I always say off-set it with shine or texture to keep your outfit from looking boring or worse, like you are trying to hide your shape. There is a ton of black this fall but it looks modern when you mix things like leather and silk and fur or even great knitwear.

I stole the sign from the promo shoot we did for the show in the 2nd or 3rd season. I love that they made traffic signs out of our rules and it was too good not to take home! It lives in my shoe closet. I built a low level wall to create a more closed-off bedroom space. I covered it in Osborne and Little’s hummingbird wallpaper—a choice I have never regretted. I get bored with things and like to change them up but this wallpaper has just remained a fave. It comes in so many gorgeous color ways too! I like to have a variety of evening bags to help spice up solid color cocktails dresses. I always go for printed shoes and bags to mix with more basic clothing pieces. The artist is Nay. I loved it the moment I saw it. Who can honestly claim that love isn’t a drug? Clutch, Jimmy Choo

Dress, Lemlem

I swear I wish I could remember what company made the lip-gloss for me but I don’t. They did it for my old talk show, Fashionably Late. Isn’t it the best ever? I have the armadillo shoe from the McQueen exhibit. I loved that show more than I know how to say. It was such a fitting tribute for the designer he was. It had soul and beauty, passion and compassion for a very complex, genius mind. I feel lucky to have seen both the exhibit and some of his shows, to have met him and liked him so much personally.

Will always love a good speakeasy - Angels Share (been going there since college), Death and Co., The Raines Law Room, Ella, and more. Shoes, Versace; Necklace, Stacy London for Sorrelli

The photo is a print from Irving Penn, which he gave to me when I left Vogue. My editor worked with him frequently and I was always propping funny things for his pictures. The image of the mannequin reminded him of his late wife and he wanted to photograph it in glass. Finding the perfect glass cloche for the size of the mannequin head proved to be very difficult and he was very grateful when I found it. The picture is probably my most prized possession. L to R. Shoes, Lila Castellaneta; Necklace, Ann Taylor

For the black addicts, I always say off-set it with shine or texture to keep your outfit from looking boring or worse, like you are trying to hide your shape. There is a ton of black this fall but it looks modern when you mix things like leather and silk and fur or even great knitwear. Shoes, Yves Saint Laurent

Alexis gave me these pendants. He is a dear and long-time friend. He’s the McQueen of jewelry design to me. He is always evolving his talent. He never rests on his laurels. He finds new inspiration constantly and makes everything he does (designing jewelry, running his company) look so effortless. He started selling jewelry on the street when he was 16. He’s so humble and never takes his life and success for granted. I’m really in awe of him. Red Necklace, Lee Angel; Resin Necklaces, Alexis Bittar

Maybe I’ll just switch it out for another color way one day. L to R. Shoes, Miu Miu, Jean-Michel Cazabat, Miu Miu, Tabitha Simmons, Giuseppe Zanotti

I love this [necklace]. It’s actually very easy to wear. It does all the work for you. It dresses up a tee shirt and jeans, or a simple dress, even a sweater and trousers. The dress is Derek Lam and I wore it to host a Pink and Black gala for the American Cancer Society. I shortened it after the event to make it easier to re-wear in every day life.
