Writer. New York
Stephanie LaCava is a globally recognized fashion and lifestyle writer who splits her time between New York and Paris. Raised in France, LaCava attended Colgate University and entered the edit world with her in-depth pieces for publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair, before penning her own memoir, An Extraordinary Theory of Objects. We caught up with the whimsical LaCava inside her NYC apartment and were greeted with a full spread of curated candy upon walking through her door – a signature staple of the entertaining habits of Ms. LaCava. “I’m obsessed with colorful candy especially when I entertain,” she says. “And the more old school the better”. Wearing a top by one of our favorites Roksanda Ilincic, LaCava spoke about her admiration for American accessories designers and her great respect for Joan Didion (whom she hosted a party for at her house a few weeks prior to our shoot). But perhaps her most humbling story came in the form of a pair of shiny yellow Doc Martens – something she always had her eye on as a teenager but never actually bought. “It was a really special moment because growing up in France, I had always wanted a pair when I walked around this area, but could never afford them with my babysitting money”. Take a peek inside the colorful and beetle-filled world of the dashing Ms. Stephanie LaCava.

I was so happy to find this in my size-I love it so much, especially since this was one of Raf Simons' iconic designs. I wore it with a white t-shirt to an event and will wear it again in a couple of years. For now, I am keeping it safe.

The box clutch was my mother-in-law’s mother’s and I am just borrowing it because I am in love with it—and her. The opal ring was my grandmother's and mother's and I wore it at my wedding. I love coral of all kinds—this is an estate angel skin coral ring I found from a dealer in NYC. The earrings are Victorian, they are hollow, really beautiful gold work but I don’t have pierced ears anymore. The Napoleon III coral/diamond bracelet I found in the south of France. And the boots are again, skin hybrid and high heels.

I love Eddie Borgo- he’s super special to me—so I of course have his spike bracelets. The choker’s by Kenny Hwang who custom makes pieces for me. He’s an awesome guy who has the best voice ever. There’s a great story about his work being discovered by an editor when he was selling it on the street.

Pendants, Custom Pamela Love
Pamela Love is truly talented with her jewelry, but also an awesome, creative soul. I love that she doesn’t waver from her aesthetic–whenever I see someone wearing a Navajo coat I run up to them and kiss them, because I assume it's my Pam. Her [husband]’s illustrating my book.

These shoes are super special-they have snakeskin toes. I used to dance and I love high heels-these are ballet slipper hybrids by such a talent. The unicorn was created by another hero my father. He made it with masking tape and old magazines-he’s all about reappropriated materials and being creative with what we have.

I got these yellow [boots] in a shop around Chatelet Les Halles in Paris—it was a really special moment because growing up in France I had always wanted a pair when I walked around this area, but could never afford them with my babysitting money. I like to wear them with shorts—I wear shorts whenever I can. Someone once saw me in jeans and was like, “You wear pants?” Not really. I love Max and Erin from Suno- they are super special and super talented-they designed a special print and created my bridesmaids' dresses for my wedding. The antique inkwell and quill was one of the most special wedding gifts I received from an angel of mine-and next to it is an actual shipwreck bowl, which was a gift from my best friend and brother.
