Steven Arroyo

Restaurateur. Los Angeles

As longtime followers of restaurateur Steven Arroyo (La Escuela is our go-to spot in L.A.) and longtime friend of Cov-alum Curtis Kulig, we knew we had to meet the man behind our favorite taqueria. Arroyo's laid-back vibe translates to his mostly modern style, which is infused with rustic details, and permeates both his wardrobe and work. His closet had a slightly utilitarian feel, filled with rugged and well-worn workwear that still embodied that East Coast lifestyle. It also fit perfectly with the art and décor in his home, both littered with obscure and esoteric references. Fashion (and food) aside, Arroyo's a real family man, and we had a blast hanging with his kids during our shoot. P.S.—tacos soon?

"I'm in boots eight days a week but only thirty nine weeks a year; that adds up to a Carpe Diem split-toe calf boot, brown, sewed and resoled six times in ten years. I've worn it around the world. I wore it watching my children be brought into this world. I wore it during this shoot, which is probably why they are not photographed here. I talk them into going places. I had them cleaned once upon a time in Mexico City. I've take them anywhere, I'd leave them nowhere."

Curtis Kulig. I've watched this kid blossom into one of the most prolific pop artists of his generation. He is my best friend on the planet and I would do anything for him.

I cook a few meals a week. I like to cut fresh raw fish; big fan of sashimi. I enjoy watching eggs cook and I love roasting a chicken.

I jumped into the restaurant business like everything else I jump into. First goes my heart, then my below-the-waist area, then my feet, then my brain. I absolutely love what I do. I have been doing it for eighteen years. I just opened a shop that has been a life long dream of mine. It's called Pigeon, and I sell anything and everything I think is beautiful and in balance. A space in perfect balance can feel like heaven (I think). My shop "Pigeon" sits right next door to "La Otra" which is a Taqueria dedicated to pairing flavors to a corn tortilla. I also push fresh fish out of "Escuela," a mariscos café that sits around the corner. I've done bigger projects around the city for the last two decades, but never anything better.

My favorite book is Miles, the biography of Miles Davis. I also like Scar Tissue, the biography of Anthony Kiedis. I like to read into truths, and those two characters wrote those books without shame. Without shame is always a good story. My first pair of Converse were baby blue and they were without a "MADE IN CHINA" label. I was in the 4th grade and when they wore out my mom tried to switch them up with Kinney's knock offs. I was able to tell the difference way back then. To this day I wonder if she saw the difference. The biggest secret to Converse is buying the right size. They look horrible just a little too big or just a little too small. My go-tos are high tops and pine green.

I like a few bars: Three of Clubs, The Spare Room, and Roger Room. Bars are for memories, much more than a watering hole. I drink water in between Tequila neat, and Dewar's over fancy ice cubes when available. When I'm at home I like to drink Havana Club Rum and rap to a woman who's drinking Whiskey.
