THE MARKET: An Ode to Warhol

We channel our inner Silver Factory superstars and pay homage to the Pop Art patriarch.

Imagine being a fly on the wall (or, maybe a waify muse in the corner) at the late great Andy Warhol’s famed Factory Studio, where some of the most amazing musicians, artists and creative types of the ’60s got their inspiration. OK, they may have had a little “chemical assistance” as well....

But seriously, almost twenty years after his death, the bewigged Bohemian is popping up everywhere. We found him in the form of a crazy luxe Diamond Dust Mickey Mouse print in the home of Tommy and Dee Hilfiger, who also boasted works from Warhol’s protégé, Jean-Michel Basquiat (what? Us, jealous?). And then there was Kaley Cuoco’s place, where some surrealist takes on Warhol’s famous Jackie O portraits presided over the dining room. And we’re pretty sure it’s not just a coincidence that Leslie Fremar, who styled a very Edie-esque Charlize Theron for the Oscars, has an iconic Campbell’s Soup can printed dress hanging as a piece of framed art in her pad. Right?

We all know art doesn’t exist in a bubble...or at least that’s what we were told in art class. Warhol was himself a pretty prolific dude, from printmaking to photography to filmmaking to founding Interview Magazine, a.k.a our pop culture bible. So we weren’t the most shocked to find some sartorial iterations of old Andy’s designs on the runways and in the closets of many of our Cov-alums, from Jeanne Beker’s Campbell’s Soup clutch designed by Philip Treacy, to Claire Distenfeld’s pop-art Lisa Perry dresses. We recently popped by Lisa Perry's pad (er, art gallery?) and you won't believe the works or art she's got by Warhol... and Lichtenstein, and Hirst, and Koons, and more. Her entire collection is dedicated to the art movement that emerged in the late 50s/early 60s. Even Marc Jacobs’s spring collection seemed Warhol-inspired with mod jumpsuits and op-art stripes fit for a Factory Girl. We’re still trying to get our hands on one (or two or three...) of Jeremy Scott’s pop art pieces. Those Bart Simpson bedecked knits? Talk about nostalgia—you know we love us some ’90s throwback.

And speaking of “way back when,” it’s pretty damn ironic (dontcha think?) that considering he coined the phrase “Fifteen minutes of fame,” that Mr. Warhol’s spotlight is far from fading.
