THE BEAUTY: Oil Spill - Part 2
It's been hammered into our heads that oil is the enemy. We're here to make peace (and set the record straight!)
As we previously discussed in the first part of our quest to dispel the myth of facial and body oils, we too once feared those luxurious liquids in the pretty bottles. And like we said, regardless of where you fall on the dry/oily spectrum, we're betting you could benefit from swapping out some of your current skin and hair fixes for oil formulas. While cleansing is one thing, the prospect of leaving oil on your face without washing it is another. Plump, glowy skin doesn't just manifest on its own—but a nourishing face oil does just the trick (just ask the Anndra Neen girls). These picks absorb almost instantly with a little bit of elbow grease, are ideal for day or night, and won't leave a slick sheen glistening on your face the way some formulas do. Here are some of our favorite contenders:
Fresh's Seaberry Face Oil comes in an apothecary-like bottle, has a slightly spa-like smell we love, and a dropper applicator that doles just the right amount every time. Since it's slightly on the heavier, richer side, we think it's best for night, but still appropriate for oily skin. Rodin's Olio Lusso is kind of the OG luxury face oil, and is widely-raved about for a reason: remember makeup magician Tom Pecheux’s words of wisdom backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show? “It’s the one product every girl should have. Just massage, massage, massage!” We're obsessed with its sleek, minimal packaging, and unlike other oils, it’s ideal to wear even under make-up as well as at night. Plus, Coveteurs like Stacy London are devoted fans.
While most facial oils use a combination of a couple of different essential and botanical extracts, NUDE's ProGenius Oil uses a whopping ten, making it a bit of a heavy-hitter, but still light enough that it can actually be blended with foundation…genius (Erika Bearman is a fan. Anything with @OscarPRGirl’s seal of approval probably has ours, as well). Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil is loaded with brightness-bolstering Vitamin C and Essential Fatty Acids, which work to repair damaged skin cells that cause dullness.
And then we have Sunday Riley's Juno, which is kind of the equivalent to a gateway drug in the world of all things S.R. While typically this falls into serum territory, if this little bottle doesn't make you a convert, nothing will; it's loaded with magic retinol, but still gentle enough to use every night.
While oil-based skin care is really is a cure-all for (most) of what ails your skin during the winter months, we don't advise that you suddenly ditch them once it begins to warm up. Here's our proposition for your first attempt at making the switch: at night, do a little light fruit peel, (see: Don’t Hate! Exfoliate.), and follow it up by massaging on a face oil of your choice before hitting the sheets. You're welcome!
