THE ONE-ON-ONE: "What Do Kate Moss & I Have in Common?

The dress that got around.

“The story is this: It comes in many parts. This dress was commissioned by my stepmother, Jade Hobson, who was Vogue's Creative Director. She knew that at 20-years-old I was obsessed with Stephen Sprouse. So she had it commissioned for me. Hot dawg! I didn't even know what that meant, okay? So I got this as a ‘prom dress.’ I wore it to a prom I went to with a friend at The Underground or Area (I didn't have a prom!). I also performed with my dad, Martin Charnin, Andrea "Annie" McArdle and Sandy at The Waldorf for something… I can't remember what for now. The image of me wearing the dress was at my 35th birthday.

But… the most famous/infamous moment of the dress was when Joe Zee was at W Magazine and he called me because they were doing a 75th anniversary cover and he wanted original dresses from designers, which no one had archived. Could they borrow my Sprouse? I was hesitant because I was afraid I wasn't going to see it again –you know when that happens (and that has happened to me). So I lent them this dress and a single cross earring that Janis Savitt designed for Sprouse, all ordered for me by my stepmother Jade.

So it's photographed on none other than KATE MOSS! I died. She wanted to keep it, but thank god Joe didn't give it to her. I mean, it's Kate Moss; I would have given it to her. I did get the dress back, though.

I was interviewed by W Magazine about it, but what I didn't say – which is freaking mind-blowing in reality is – if you would have told me that Kate Moss and I would fit in the same dress, my dress, I would have told you “no f*$#ing way!" Well, WAY.”

 - As told to The Coveteur by Us Weekly’s Sasha Charnin Morrison

"Sasha told me about that signature dress in her closet years ago and I never forgot. So of course when I desperately needed it for an anniversary cover of W, I couldn't find it anywhere - except for Sasha. She saved me - and dressed Kate in the process." - ELLE's Creative Director, Joe Zee
