No, we're still not over them.
It was in September of 2010 (before this baby, as in the website that you are reading, was even born) that we first laid eyes on them. As a parade of supers, including Gisele Bündchen, Carolyn Murphy, and Stella Tennant, stomped down the catwalk, we were (as we are so wont to do) drawn down to their shoes—pairs of punky, slightly clunky, glossy black buckled combat boots. And to come completely clean... initially, we didn't so much as bat an eye at them. And while we wish we could say our interest was piqued once they hit store shelves, in the interest of full disclosure, we have to come clean—it wasn't until we saw Mary-Kate Olsen stomping into a Paris hotel that spring that we actually sat up and paid attention. Styled with a beat-up Hermès bag, black fur chubby and a skirt from the same collection, it became unequivocally clear that the Olsen's power of persuasions are seriously not to be underestimated.
And we're not the only ones who have been brought over to the Balenciaga side. We've found them in the closets of everyone from Whitney Port to Leandra Medine and the Beckermans. But no mention of the Balenciaga boot is quite complete without a nod to stylist Fiona Green, whose collection tops out at five pairs (and who just so happens to be a member of the 'Original Six' subjects we shot.) As she told us, "These boots are so perfect that I bought a second pair to stash away for when the first pair wears out. I wear them year-round, without socks in the summer and with thermal ski socks in the winter. The heel height is perfect for marathon photoshoots when I know I'll be on my feet all day. I have a little collection of different versions too: the black and white low cut derby shoes, the flat sandals, and the high-heel sandals. All with the same buckle detail." Now that's dedication, kids.
