Yigal Azrouel

Designer.  New York

Yigal Azrouël is more than just a designer. As we quickly learned from our shoot with him, he’s also a part-time handyman and all around genuinely amazing guy. As one of our most hands-on Coveteur subjects to date, Azrouël channeled his inner Ty Pennington and got on board full force when we invaded his NYC abode. He was right in there, hammering nails into the walls, moving around heavy-duty furniture and actively playing a role in giving himself the true Coveteur treatment. We love a man that doesn’t mind getting his hand’s dirty, especially one with so much on his design plate. Born and raised in the Holy Land, the self-taught designer launched his eponymous women’s wear label in ’98, which has since expanded into menswear, accessories and even a diffusion line, Cut25. Azrouël’s aesthetic has been applauded and appreciated by all, which led to his induction into the CFDA in 2004 – a role that he continues to be an active participant in. Besides his ultra-feminine silhouettes and signature draping, we appreciate Azrouël’s motives of producing a large portion of the collections locally – a lost-process that we don’t really see nowadays. It’s easy to understand why Dolce & Gabbana personally selected him as one of eight young and emerging designers to be featured at Milan’s Spiga2 store. With an eye for detail and innovation, Azrouël’s creative control extends into the depths of his own closet. “I take my creative eye with me wherever I go and whenever I travel, which is often, I love taking time out to search for new and interesting pieces. I have found things locally, in the surrounding states, but have found most great pieces on my travels to Morocco, Hong Kong and Costa Rica, to name a few places.” His personal collection of vintage finds – a hobby he enjoys doing in his spare time – comes through in his menswear line. And we weren’t surprised to find the majority of his wardrobe stashed away in industrial lockers and filled with pieces from his own collection. Even though it’s been our warmest winter in years, with the temperature dropping we could definitely use some of his chunky knits to cozy up in. Hey, Yigal. Got a few to spare?

I love collecting vintage pieces. Both of these pieces were collected at a flea market in Springfield, Mass. In my free time, I like to get in my car and drive to different areas in search of interesting finds.

Using the two different textures of suede and leather in the boots was meant to create a multi-dimensional effect, and give the boots more purpose.

The sweater is a Mélange Yarn we worked with to create a destructive look as opposed to a clean finished collar. I like using deconstruction techniques in my work. It’s fun to experiment and try these techniques with different fabrics.

The Rolex was found in an antique shop in Paris on one of my trips, it's such a great piece. The binoculars were another piece picked up along my travels. The majority of my furniture as well as the boutique furniture are antiques.

I love wearing leather jackets, and whenever creating something, the same aesthetic comes to mind. When creating this piece, I thought of a leather vest and wanted to substitute it with the knit for a modern take on an outerwear piece.

This is the 38th edition. While it doesn’t hold a special meaning for me, personally, I like looking through it and finding something new every time. It’s more than just a book, it’s inspiration.

The jacket is cashmere and wool with a knit sleeve. I think it’s a great play on your basic men’s jacket. It gives it some character.

Knits are so great because they give comfort some style. They can keep you warm and cozy on a cold day, and they still look great.

I like how minimal this picture is with the bag demanding attention with its vibrant color. The bag was created with the accent of color in mind. The bag itself was inspired by the Russian Military.

The bag was created as a proto and gave me a lot of inspiration for my Women’s Fall 2011 bags. We recreated the bag this season with a more modern shape to it and it looks great.
